MMORPG crashes with Avast Home installed

Hello,

I have Avast Home installed, and quite a large amount of trojans quarantined in the program.

When attempting to load a favorite MMORPG, (online RPG) it crashes with the critical error found below.
I’ve come across many other people with this same error, and no one can find the cause or a solution. I’ve been playing this MMORPG for years now, and I’ve only ever run into this error after having recently installed Avast Home.

Could it be a confliction with the Avast software? Or that a trojan could have been undetected and is crashing the game? Then again I’ve unknowingly had trojans before with no problems running the game.
Ragexe.exe is the game unable to load properly.

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
  • Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • In Xp/Vista, any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.

Check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX there (where XXXX is a random number)?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I did not include the information earlier.

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date? WinXP Pro SP1, not up to date
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number? Avast 4.7-1098. VPS file: 071206-0, 12/6
  • Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
Shutting down Avast protection services, reinstalling the program and patching the program,
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one? Only Linksys router firewall
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Only Avast
  • Any other security programs that could interfere? No.
  • In Xp/Vista, any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’

In Events>Antivirus>

There is a log with these errors for each attempted start of the game program.

Why SP1 only?

Which program are you talking? avast or the game?

So, no software firewall…

Seems that this program ragnarok.exe is having problem with memory (RAM).
Is it a part of that game?

Sorry, I’m not an expert on conflict trobleshooting and games…

Why SP1 only?
I’ve been putting off SP2 for an upcoming OS reinstall. I know I should update…

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I had tried shutting down Avast’s services, and then reinstalling and patching the game, as they were suggestions from other players.

Seems that this program ragnarok.exe is having problem with memory (RAM).
Is it a part of that game?

It does take a good amount of memory, yes. If that is what you mean.

As for this error:
Event Source: avast!
Event Category: Client
aswChestInterface - Program error description: CChestListView::ExtractSelectedFiles() chestGetFile() failed: 32.

Would that mean it’s trying to access a system file that’s also in the chest (kernel32.dll?) and that’s causing the crash? The kernel32.dll is always listed in the critical error crash report.

Sorry, I’m not an expert on conflict trobleshooting and games…
It’s okay. I really appreciate any help.

Maybe uninstall avast. Install and update the game.
Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation and then install again avast from the scratch.

Maybe you’ll to create the dump, here Vlk explains how to create a dump file here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22636.msg187340#msg187340 and here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23283.msg193594#msg193594

This is a Chest (Quarantine) error. Don’t worry by now.

No. The chested file (kernel32.dll) is there for backup purposes. It’s not being accessed by the game or causing the crash in any way.

Maybe you’ll to create the dump, here Vlk explains how to create a dump file here:
I’m not familiar with creating those, but I will read into it, as well as Process Explorer. Thank you

Before I uninstall Avast, is there any way to tell if its okay to delete certain trojans?
I’d like to delete a few if possible, because it took a long time to quarantine them the first time… ><
I have a lot of trojans with similar names such as “A0090561.exe, A0089561.exe… etc”
As well as explorer.exe, smhost.exe, svchost.exe.

Why don’t you Chest (Quarantine) them? It shouldn’t be that hard.
It’s safer than just to delete. It allows restoring, just in case.
You can run avast at boot time if you have troubles to send them to Chest.
