Somewhere along the line, ages ago, I zoomed in on my own map pin (for my own curiosity, I thought) right down to a detailed street-map level, and found afterwards it had been saved that way for anyone to view if they look at my profile.
Any way to edit that so it shows simply the city?
(Edit) I just tried doing it via “edit profile info”, but saving changes didn’t save the changed map display.
I didn’t know you could pin it that accurately, I know for sure mine isn’t that accurate, I just dumped the pin somewhere in the middle of England. So unless you were somewhat more precise or gave specific details in your profile on location, I don’t know how they could know as “southern Ont. Canada” is pretty general.
Unless there is an IP address function, but that would only give the ISP location, weird.
Do what I did, move the pin some conveniently anonymizing distance from your actual house.
Mine now shows me living under a tree about a km away from the real abode.
The change was saved no problem.
OK, I have been playing about with this, my pin when I checked was in the middle of the English Channel (so I must live on a boat) in a busy shipping lane ;D
If you follow the directions given when you are in your profile, Forum Profile Information section, which says if you want to move the pin, first click on it to remove it. Then position it at a point as close as you feel comfortable to where you live, which I did and clicked Change Profile and for me that was saved, check mine.
So you should be able to first remove the pin and reposition it.
Thanks, guys. I even tried removing the pin and then zooming back out before putting it back in, but the stupid thing insists on remembering the original zoom level (though the location is correctly changed) when re-displaying after saving the change. Oh, well …
(Edit) Hmm … wonder if logging out after removing the pin, then logging back in before replacing it would make a diff?

Mine now shows me living in the harbour (intentional) and has remembered the change.

I take it you are in the Forum Profile Information section, when trying to edit the map pin.
Right – apparently you can’t do any editing at all from the members-map link (presumably just a viewer).
Hopefully this is a bug that someone someday will wake up to and fix.
I’m not sure I understand the “bug”.
I can edit my map no trouble.
I don’t think anyone should be able to edit the map from other than their own profile/modify page.
The bug I was referring to was that when editing the map entry (in the proper place, by the way, one’s own profile settings), you (or at least I) don’t seem to be able to change the zoom level and have that saved properly. But change in location does save fine.
I think the zoom level will default to the best possible magnification.
Probably a fair guess – I’m in a good-sized city (around 500,000), and street maps (both “hard” and online) are widely available for the area, so I guess if your pin is in such a city then the view is, as you say, at a high-detail (street-map) zoom level.
Well you can click on my user name and you will see that being in a rural location it doesn’t go down to anything like the same detail.
