My computer is running Windows ME and I am using ZoneAlarm as a firewall.
I am trying to set up avast to protect my email.
Mail programme is Netscape 7.1.
In the mail program (Netscape7.1):
POP Mail Server
Server Name: pop3.uk .worldonline.com
User Name: davemarsden.screaming.net
Port: 110
Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings
Server Name: 127.0.0.1
User Name: davemarsden#smtp.uk.worldonline.com
With this set up the outgoing messages are checked and a note inserted.
I change POP Mail Server settings to:
Server Name: 127.0.0.1
User Name: davemarsden#pop3.uk.worldonline.com
If I attempt to send an email I get the message:
Alert. The PASS command did not succeed. Mail server 127.0.0.1 responded: [AUTH] invalid user or password.
Any help greatly appreciated. I am impressed by avast! and its frequent updates and if I can solve this problem will probably upgrade to Pro.
Dafydd, if you want you can take a look into Settings in my signature.
You will found a lot of other possibilities to configure avast and an explanation of all avast4.ini file configurations
avast! works with multiple smtp/pop servers and can protect as many pop3/smtp server accounts as you want:
Configure your email accounts to work without the antivirus and test them.
If everything is fine, close all your email clients (programs).
Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard
Follow the non Outlook/Exchange option (i.e., the second one).
You can choose the supported email programs and select all the accounts
(even the ones created in the future).
Configure your email accounts to use avast! as antivirus.
Note: the pop/smtp default servers are just the ‘default’ ones. They would be used to send files to Alwil Software (for virus analysis, for instance) and in special email accounts configurated to use ‘default’ servers.
@Technical.
Many thanks for your quick reply.
My first attempt to have avast! check my emails was by using the wizard, (this is how the default pop and smtp entries were created in avast4.ini. It was when this method failed that I printed the instructions for Manual setting of mail protection and half succeeded! My outgoing mail is checked.
I am sure I have overlooked something very simple, so I will experiment further.
again, thanks for your advice.
