I get an email monthly from my gas company. This month it’s marked SPAM in the subject line. Did Avast do that or my email client? I looked in the settings and couldn’t find anything that even looked like Avast has a setting for that. I’m using Avast free 2015 on Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thanks
There’s no spam protection in the free version.
Are you sure you have avast 2015 and that it is not (automatically) updated to version 2016 ?
When you open it up it says 2015.
And I found out my email client doesn’t use the word “spam” (it uses “junk”) and doesn’t change subject lines so that’s not where it’s coming from.
What is your email client ?
MS Outlook used to have an avast plugin and I can’t recall if that was able to handle spam and brand the email subject in this way.
It can be the ISP has changed their mail scanner settings.
Thunderbird 38.3.0.
OK, Thunderbird (which I also use) with avast free and the Mail Shield doesn’t have an anti-spam function. So I can’t really see where this is coming from, all it is looking for is malware and that brands the email Subject with the *** VIRUS *** text. Whilst this is similar I believe it would still retain the same format 3 *'s a space TEXT a space and 3 *'s.
I have briefly checked thunderbirds spam/junk and that is based on sending it to a junk folder (as you mentioned).
Does your ISP or email server filter for spam ?
If so that is the only area I can think of that could possibly impact in this way.
You could try disabling the avast Mail Shield before you are expecting the next monthly email and see if that also comes branded. Of course it is possible that it won’t be branded, but that could also come from any ISP/email server learning and no longer considering it spam.
Sorry I haven’t got anything more positive for you.
To my knowledge the ISP doesn’t do any spam filtering. Guess it’s time to check.
Thanks for your help.
You’re welcome.
