Just a quick question, what is the most effective way to thoroughly scan a computer, scanning in safe mode, boot time scanning, or something else?
Thanks for any replies ;D

johnny,
The best way to “thoroughly” scan a computer is to have every accessible file examined.
This includes boot files, archives, hidden, system, email and running processes.
Avast does a very good job and in version 4.6.623 a Web Shield was included to scan html pages! Neato!
Normally Avast can be set to run a boot scan, followed by a “thorough” scan (setting) including arhives (setting) in addittion to most of the other files in the computer.
By nature, Avast will scan you email as well.
Are all anti-virus programs 100% effrective? Well, it is nice to think so, but in reality, they do a near perfect job. It is wise to have a second scanner available even if it is an online one to compare any “virus alerts” you get.
Hope this helps.
John, effectiveness won’t be the ‘exactly’ word here I suppose.
avast use the same virus database and will scan inside archive files if you ask too. It will be, mostly, a problem of access to the files.
MethodArchive files scanningFile access

On-demmandYes (all)Limited (system files will be in use)

Safe-modeYes (all)Less limited than normal boot

Boot timeYes (limited to the un-pachkers loaded)Unlimited
oh i see, so different scanning methods have different accesses to files.
Thanks a lot for both replies, they sure did help answer my question. ;D
