Does anyone know where I can get the most recent release of Avast 4.5? I’m tired of screwing around with 4.6 and having nothing but problems between it and my ZoneAlarm firewall. I’m forced to allow all cookies, now I’m picking up tracking cookies galore, which I never did before. I get an error message with my local library’s page which I never did before and what is this “avast! Web Proxy”? that inserts itself in my blocked ads messages now (I use a hosts file)? I always liked Avast prior and even back when they had the odd way of routing email, I still managed to use it and liked it. Now this new WebShield feature is driving me crazy.
I’ve read all your posts, and to me it seems all your problems are solved if you follow the instructions people have been giving you.
No, I’m having problems with getting all the tracking cookies that I didn’t used to get since I have to allow all cookies in ZoneAlarm in order to use the internet with Avast WebShield. However, right now I am test running having some cookies blocked with ZoneAlarm (setting at Medium) and having the proxy settings suggested by Avast in Firefox to see if that blocks those pesky tracking cookies and still allows Avast and my internet to work together.
Keeps us informed of the tests (and the results) please.
I now assume that you have you read the Sticky thread at the top of this forum by Vlk about ZoneAlarm.

This should give you a work around that still allows you cookie filtering?
I rarely get many cookies in firefox, certainly not many that I concerned about as I don’t allow third party cookies (those not originating from the website you are browsing.
Tools - Options - Privacy - Cookies. You could also look for the firefox extension CookieCuller as this also gives extra functionality.
In firefox, i have set it up to clear all cokkies apon closing the browser, this seems to solve the problems of only allowing certain ones and and having to delete the not needed ones.

Yes, Vlk’s post information is what I’m using right now with ZoneAlarm’s cookie block set to Medium. I also have Firefox set to only allowing originating website cookies. Before I discovered that my browsing problems were due to Avast’s program update, I spent nearly a whole day uninstalling and re-installing ZoneAlarm, Firefox and trying to retweak their settings. I did have many tweaks for cookies set in Firefox previously but lost them all when I uninstalled it (allowing cookies for certain websites, etc.) I just wish that the beta testers for Avast would have discovered these problems before the new version was released to the wild. It would have saved me much time and anguish.

It would have saved me much time and anguish.I think the beta testers did a great job and found most of the problems and the ALWIL team was fast with the fix. Of coarse when Avast! was realesed to the masses other thing would crop up, more users=more chance for inconsistency.
If you liked Avast 4.5 and want to go back, why don’t you just turn Webshield off ? even with Webshield disabled 4.6 is a much more polished efficient program.
If I pause the WebShield and put ZoneAlarm’s Ad blocking back on high, I still have to have the recommended proxy setting for Avast in my Firefox or the intenet access problems with the browser return. If I have ZoneAlarm’s Ad Blocking set to high with the WebShield on, browsing will work but some pop up windows such as “click on photos” will not work (they did before Avast 4.6). If I have Zone Alarm’s Ad Blocking set to high with WebShield off, the pop up “click on photos” windows will work. If I have Zone Alarm’s Ad Blocking turned off with WebShield on, sthe “click on photos” will work also. However, I don’t know about other pop up windows in these cases, only the “click on photos” pop-ups. However, in all these cases, I have to have the proxy setting recommended by Avast to allow me to browse properly, whether I have WebShield turned on or off. Perhaps this is because of my Hosts file. I really have not had time to test with my Hosts file turned on and off.
If you pause webshield it stll acts as turned on for some functions you must use the teerminate key then things go back to normal
Great, terminating it worked. Now it’s like the older version. Guess I’ll just decide on how I want to handle this for now. Thanks!
