Why is it necessary to update so frequently Mozilla Firefox? Is Internet Explorer more stable or Microsoft doesn’t care so much about security (although we get cumulative patches from time to time in updates) and don’t want to waste so much time and money? It’s time consuming for extension and adds-on developers :o!
well, i think Microsoft collects their bugs and corrects them with one update (patch-day) and mozilla releases their updates immediately when they are finished (after testing )…
I hope Firefox keeps improving but does not make so many extensions to stop working…
Nowadays, I can’t imagine Firefox without extensions and each update of Firefox is a nightmare with the extensions… themes… plugins… >:(
This is the main reason why I moved to Opera.
I don’t see this as an issue, after all if you improve the security of a product, you must surely ensure that those add-ons comply with that product. I tend to wait when there is a big jump in the update like this to give the add-on developers a chance to catch up.
What I was trying to express in this thread was:“Is there too much a form of “paranoia” in so many frequent updates at Mozilla and is it worth it after all?” 8)
Firefox is, and will prob remain the superior browser in my opinion, for all I do anyway… There are a very few things that require IE, but other than that FF is it for me ;D
I use an unpatched version of IE 6 for a few needed operations.
As for opera, I have one, but have found it a mix between the two, and dont care for it… But hey, to each their own… I hope that anyone that chooses to use it has great success doing so ;D
Sorry but there is some nonsense here tied into the release of FF3.
It is almost unknown for a security point release of FF (ie 2.0.13 to 2.0.14) to cause any issues with extensions. FF is simply responding (rather faster than MS usually) to a security flaw. It does not matter how many of these point releases there are … it is almost like VPS updates with avast.
The issues with extensions come with higher level releases of FF. Of the type FF2 to FF3. This is where the design of FF shows its weakness and it is a serious one. There is always going to be the stress of all those who want the latest and greatest release (though to be honest the majority of those wanting it are rarely technically competent to know what they are dealing with) versus staying with the continuing supported releases of the older version. The FF developers are keen to “show off their stuff” but they are trying to drag a lot of unpaid and not always willing extension developers along with them. The extensions are typically written so that they expect to work with all current releases of FF within the current major release (ie FF 2.. or FF3..).
Right now the ongoing issue is those extension developers who created extensions to work with FF2 and did not update them to work with FF3. The Mozilla developers decided to tighten the rules for extensions in FF3 which adds to this level of uncertainty.
FF2 is still supported - very few users must have FF3 but the hype surrounding its release makes most think they do - it is largely a myth. For the vast majority of users the continuing security updates to FF2 and the continued running of their favorite extensions with it are, most likely, a better bet.
It is a bit like most major enterprises still running on the well known Windows XP SP3 rather than having to deal with all the issues of switching to Windows Vista.
This is just as i’ve post here, and everywhere else, and things I live by… My feelings are, “if it aint broke, dont fix it”
So if you all are more comfy with all these updaters, and conflicts between them, I wish you the best. But when I find a cerntain combo that works really well, I choose to leave it be.
Hi Firefox and Flock users,
I never had a thing with running my extensions in Fx 3.0 and higher since I installed Nightly Tester Tools.
I once installed it with Minefield where it is a handy add-on. So when the developer has forgotten to update his version to run inside the latest Fx or Flock version, enforce it with this versatile extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6543
pol
P.S. There are extensions that are really incompatible with later versions of Fx, they can cause your Fx to malfunction (you cannot go one page back) or interfere with other extensions, but this behaviour is rare.
D.
I hardly think paranoia is the word, FF 3.0 has been in development for some time and has been released.
Security updates are hardly paranoia but what a user expects prompt action to reported issues and if something is a security fix, why wait to the next monthly patch Tuesday as Microsoft is happy to do and leave users hanging in the wind with their trousers round their ankles.
Sorry but I have to question your use of paranoia ???
As somebody mentioned, I’m no tech specialist but I simply find browsers updates too much as a simple user. It’s more complicated that our Avast virus def. wich are quite simple to receive. Each browser update is welcome but complex and turns everything around in browsing habits (it’s my sobbing cry about dr. web antivirus link scanner addios to FF3.0.1). But to be honest, Mozilla has improved in avoiding these kind of headaches whenever an update is on. ;D
