avast doesn’t block emails it scans and alerts if a virus is found.
If you can’t send or receive emails it is more likely your firewall blocking avast.
You didn’t have to uninstall, you could have either paused or terminated the Internet Mail provider. If that allowed send and receive, it would tend to confirm firewall blocking.
What is your Operating system ?
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow access fot ashMaiSv.exe (the internet mail provider) ?
I have XP and I believe my firewall is Microsoft. Any idea how to get firewall to accept Avast? Do I have to shut down firewall and reinstall?
I see now about terminate. Thanks
I was able to receive email before I downloaded avast.
Thanks for any help. Pat
XP what Home, SP1 or SP2, if SP2 then you have available to you XP’s firewall however, that doesn’t provide outbound protection and no matter what the outcome I suggest you get a third party firewall.
Whilst the windows XP firewall is usually good at keeping your ports stealthed (hidden) it provides no outbound protection and you should consider a third party firewall.
Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (sensitive or otherwise, user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.
From the Control Panel, Windows Firewall, look at the Exceptions, ashMaiSv.exe avast email scanner and ashWebSv.exe avast Web Shield should be (or normally are) listed there.
Have (or did) you have another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Sorry I have been so vague. I have printed off your reply and will investigate.
I have XP Professional w/SP2. I did have McAfee installed and I was able to partially remove it and am still in the process of trying but needed virus protection. I learned how to get avast from PC World article about removing McAfee. I am unhappy at how cumbersome McAfee got and how it seemed to be affecting my machine.
My firewall is windows (that is all it says in security center) I know just enough about computers to be dangerous. ???
McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.
