Mozilla Mail problem

Perhaps a temporary solution is to put AVAST on pause before signing in…

offmdan.

I believe your problem about the e-mail program asking for a password each time it opens is due to configuration in TB itself.
If while in TB inbox go to>Tools,>Options,>Advanced,>If the password option has a +beside it left click on the +. That will allow you to then see a tab that says “Manage stored passwords”,>left click on that tab. You will then have 2 choices of either “Passwords saved” or “Passwords never saved”. Choose the passwords saved, you should then see your site mailbox address in the white area plus your user name and or password.
Believe if that option is set to “Passwords never saved” thats why each time when you open up into TB it is asking for the password.
Have a good day

Hi Otis,

Have checked as you said and all passwords show up.

Have un-installed AVAST again :-\ and passwords work fine.
Don’t have to save them over again once they are checked off to be remembered.

Guess my problem is unique.

Make sure your firewall has given avast full rights to hook up to your mail server.

Firewall? Check. AVAST is allowed.

As I said before, why would things work fine for OE and not for TB or Mozilla Mail?

Zé mystery!

Well i use outlook express, thunderbird, firefox with spam programs and all work with no problems what so ever. Your situation, the way it is explained and our limited access to see what is happening on your end, certainly isnt helping much. You have uninstaled avast now what 10 times or more. Avast isnt causing these problems, it just isnt feasable. I would at this point, and its my last educated guess for you, is to uninstal thunderbird, wipe out all registry entries. Then reinstal again, perhaps something is botched in the thunderbird program itself ( bad original exe–D/L fresh new version, not the one you have ). Thats all I have for you. Good luck.

Uninstalling TBird (or Mozilla too) is a big operation!

Suppose I’ll get to that as I’d like to get to the reason for this.

Is it possible that a previous (and removed) AV program had it’s impact on Mozilla (and not on OE) settings?

Probably but I think to the others would be easier to help if you specify which av programs you installed in your system before avast…
I do not use Mozilla but I think an antivirus won’t interfere just with it and not with OE…

Had AVG Pro installed before.

You unistalled it before installing avast, I suppose…
Right now, can you say in few words what you cannot do? What’s wrong?
This thread is becoming too long to know exactly what is your problem now:wink:

First AV installation was AVG, then AVG Pro.
-removed both.

Second installation was AVAST.
-problem? Mozilla Mail and Thunderbird were always prompting or sporadically prompting for password to mail accounts (even if checked to remember). OE did not have this problem.

Have been thinking of installing Thunderbird on another computer which is on Windows XP (mine is Win98SE) to see if I get the same reaction there too.

I feel myself quite incompetent so solve Mozilla and/or Thunderbird problems with avast. At least, if you uninstall AVG and then install avast! it must work without problem. Anyway, can you confirm:

  1. you checked the option ‘save password’ into email accounts
  2. you checked the option ‘save password’ into smtp authentication
  3. you checked the right option to the Internet connection (Internet Settings of the browser)
  4. your avast! configurations (Update (Advanced) options) define correctly the way you connect the Internet (dial-up or DSL)

GOOD NEWS!!!

Yesterday I’ve un-installed Mozilla, Thunderbird and even Firefox (profile folders included) and AVG Pro.

Back to AVAST since last night.

Have rebooted three times since and…

no more password requests!!! yippee!!!

-must have been because of previous AV installations.

Update.

After another reboot (4th) password request for various accounts has started up again.

Think I’ll just have to give up on this one. :-\

Sorry for taking up so much of your attention.

Does Mozilla support any kind of thorough logging? Like full traffic logging? It would be worth trying to look at those logs - at least we’d get an idea what’s going on here, really…

For those of you who have been following this saga…

Yesterday I found the courage to try AVAST again… and guess what?
It did the exact same things as mentioned before in this thread,
only this time I sent a message to Mozilla forum.
The first posting suggested I remove saved account passwords and guess what? It’s worked! (phew!)

No more password requests! Zilch, niente, da nada!

Just want to thank once again the good people here who have tried to help me resolve this issue. Very friendly and collaborative!

And of course, to AVAST for offering us this freebie!

i’m so sorry that though i’m been using firefox & thunderbird for quite some time…i have never come across such problem and can’t be of any help to you

but i’m glad that you finally solved the problem and stick to avast…

Well, I’m glad a solution was found.

If anyone ever has this problem then they won’t be left in the dark and will avoid having to go through so many frustrations.

A question remains though. Why it didn’t happen to OE? Same accounts.
