MS Office XP (SP3) Malfunctioning

I am running XP(SP3), and use the XP Office suite. I tried the free Avast trial, liked it because it worked well, so bought Avast internetSecurity in early Jan '14. Since then - or maybe soon hereafter - all of my MS Office programs have started acting up.
IE8 will now not go to some websites, and/or will not show some content of others. Some of it security related such as my financial accounts, employer sites, airline, etc.
Outlook downloads new mail, but will not display inbox contents until directed away from inbox then back again. It seems to have trouble communicating with the POP server, but will re-establish (sometimes numerous times/session if there’s a lot to download).
Something called ‘Mobile Me’ fails twice when opening Outlook - not aware of what that even is.
Word will not display/change top & bottom margins when showing Page Width view of a new document – Excel similar.
My computer has intermittently slowed significantly …Etc.

I’ve tried disabling Avast through the icon. IE8 improves a little but it is neglegible. No effect on the other isues.
Please Help! If I can’t get this straightened out I’ll have no choice but to uninstall.

Did you remove your previous av completely before installing avast?
Any other security (related) software installed?
Did you try a repair of avast?
