msconfig screwing up

The general tab in msconfig shows 3 choices for startup:
Normal
Diagnostic and
Selective.

My laptop which I am using now, lists Avast in both the Services
tab and the Startup tab.
It has the Normal button checked off.

The desktop, which I am not using, no longer starts Avast.
msconfig Startup tab lists avast, but is not checked.
If I try to add it to the startup by adding the check mark,
it goes away when I hit “äpply”.
Also, the “Normal” button is not checked off, only the
“selective” startup button.

Got any idea why I can’t restore avast to the startup menu?

Perform a repair of avast.
If that doesn’t solve it, perform a clean installation of avast.

But, since Avast is not running, how do I do a “repair”?

control panel > software > avast > change > repair

That did get avast running again. But msconfig is still screwed up.
Avast stays unchecked. I wanted to give it a test by shutting down
to see if avast starts even if unchecked, but I can’t do that right now.

I did a disk cleanup, using a built in microsoft program. Now I can’t run
the desktop. It did an update as it was shutting down, tho I don’t recall
seeing the little shield that normally warns you about it. Now when I try
to start, I get “Configuring Windows updates”
35% complete, Do not shut off the computer.
This lasts at least 1/2 hour. There appear to be no options.

The evil minds at microsoft have ruined another perfectly good Sunday.
I will not express my feelings about them right now.

The message just changed: “Cleaning up…”
Guess I will get back to you if I can get onto the desktop.

I see that there are now 2 avast entries in msconfig. One of them stays checked.
All is well… for now.

I guess I need to take this discussion to a microsoft forum.

Donations are not possible, but you can buy one of the paid version and/or let others know about avast.

Scroll down to “If you cannot Boot the computer” and follow the instructions.
I’m not saying there is malware on the system.
The logs also show other things and may tell something about the problem.

No there isn’t, avast Free is Free :wink:
I have been using avast free for eleven and a half years and I appreciate the avast free version, that is why I started helping other avast users in the support forum.
