So I’ve done research, and I’ve seen a lot of different ideas… I’ve been a personal user of Avast!for 7 ish years now and I love it. However, my sister is in the market for a new laptop and since my computer holds a lotof sensitive info I don’t want to run the risk of it being infected.
Since my dad (Who works in ITS for a University) uses MSE he is a fan now. Any ideas? I personally think Avast! is much better.
Current Pro’s: Avast!
Web Shield
IM Shield
Network Shield
File System Shield
Behavior Shield
Light Weight
Effective @ Prevention.
Simple UI
Scheduled Scanning
Cons: Avast!
So so @ Removal once establish with more serious malware.
Extensive UI w/ Advanced Settings
Cons: MSE
So So @ Prevention
No Web Shield (To my knowledge)
MSE only rated 62% on A/V Comparatives last year. (worst rating of any A/V ever!)
NO more Updates?
If you guys have anything that might help between which AV/AS we use for her that would be perfect! I would recommend Avast! Any day, but my dad is wanting her using MSE.
Comodo is also getting better, Comodo 7 Beta is out at the moment with NEW WEBSHIELD and VIRUSCOPE which is watching running processes
on the system, and its free.
I’ll cgheck the Beta out! Yeah, my dad can be a bit stubborn sometimes. He hasn’t seen the latest and greatest piece of malware and what damage it can cause.
Microsoft has unofficially acknowledged that they are getting out of the anti-virus business. Schools using free MSE can convert to avast! Endpoint Protection Suite for free. MSE only rated 62% on A/V Comparatives last year. (worst rating of any A/V ever!)

I’d heard that those were early false claims and they have no intention of dumping there antivirus, they were just recently talking about dumping it for XP but after the big stink thrown up by the Chinese that appears to have changed as well.
Microsoft are definitely far from the best at the moment but they are starting to slowly claw their way back, if you check their detection rates at VirusTotal they are several % in detection of zero day malware behind avast. http://threatcenter.crdf.fr/?Stats these results can swing heavily from week to week but it gives a good overall look at what is going on, a couple of weeks ago avast was on 81% and MSE was at 72%, Malwarebytes has also only just started rising back to the top again where it usually resides.
