msvcr80.dll missing in registry

Using one button checkup from Norton(ugh) Program Integrity Scan, I find 7 msvcr80.dll entries as missing program files. 4 are for Taxcut 2007 ( which I have finished with), 2 for Adobe Acrobat and 1 for a new program Microsoft Money Plus. The registry scan shows no errors.
Since I don’t want to fool with my registry, can anyone point me to a free good registry fixer. If not a good free one than one that isn’t too expensive.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, how’s Roro today?

When I was using Windows XP, I had a program called “Tweaknow Regcleaner” that always seemed to do a good job and was legitimate as well as free…

http://www.download.com/TweakNow-RegCleaner-Standard/3000-2094_4-10262639.html

Just remember to only delete the green or “safe” entries, otherwise you might have problems.

Best Regards…

I also use TweakNow RegCleaner Standard and suggest it to those who are not familiar with registry work because it is easy, quick, and safe to use as long as only the green “safe” entries are deleted. I do have other registry tools but I do not suggest they be used by anyone apprehensive about tinkering with the registry.

But, I am not sure this is what Roro needs. It will not hurt to try it, though.

ARdvark,
I am well; although, I just spent a couple of days reinstalling Vista and reinstalling my favorite programs. What a pain. I used the backup utility on Vista and still don’t have all my files returned to their proper places. >:(
Thanks both of you for your information. I have downloaded Tweaknow and will try it today. I will reply with the results.
Thanks again. 8) 8)

Hi Roro…

Oh, boy, isn’t that always a fun job? :frowning: In the past, whenever I had to do a reinstall of my OS, it took 3 or 4 days minimum to get everything back in it’s proper place, so I know how you feel!

You’re more than welcome for the info, let us know how it goes.

Best Regards…

I ran Tweaknow Registry cleaner. It found 4 files in the device driver section that it was safe to delete, and of course since I ran it as a beginner, it didn’t show any in the other two catagories. When I ran it as expert it had 17 files but non of them related to the missing dll files or the programs mentioned in Windoctor . I guess I just won’t worry about the missing msvcr80.ll files since the programs connected to that message are working correctly.
I really don’t want to do any damage, by fussing with the registry. One more question I have is: Although, the help directions say that Tweaknow Standard (the free version) will back up any changes made, and you can restore settings if you have problems, I only see a button on the programs page and that says click button to undo any changes you have made with Tweaknow regcleaner professional. Is this a problem with the free version?
Thanks for the program.

I suppose that Tweaknow free has a restore feature? Does it make backups?
If not, at least, write down the name of the registry key and made a backup manually of them.

Hi Roro…

I’m not sure about the backups, I haven’t used the program in a while and I never made backups. :frowning: Although, I would suspect strongly that the free version has disabled or non existant features that the Pro version has.

However…

I wondered if it might be easier just to download the .dll file in question and stick in the system folder. In this case, no, after I found this site…

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr80

Please read the following letters from that site…

Hello everyone, My name’s Martyn Lovell, and I’m the development lead of the team that produces msvcr80.dll [The Visual C++ Libraries team]. There are a couple of things I’d like to clarify. First, let me be clear that NOONE should download the file linked here, because it is a beta copy of the software and not compatible with the final version that has now been released. If you’ve already downloaded it, please delete it. Second, if you’ve seen reports from Norton WinDoctor that you need this file, they are wrong. It incorrectly reports that msvcr80 is missing when in fact it is correctly installed in the WinSxS directly in the windows. folder. If you own WinDoctor, you should report this bug to Symantec so that they get it fixed. Do NOT copy the this file to any of the folders WinDoctor recommends. If you’ve already attempted to take corrective action for this issue (by copying msvcr80.dll or msvcr80d.dll to …\system32 or to the .NET Framework directory), please delete them. These files do not need to be copied around, and doing so may cause problems in future. In future, if you think you need a copy of this file, you should contact the publisher of the application that says it needs it. msvcr80 is not distributed centrally by Microsoft, but instead ‘comes with’ the applications you use. Most of you have probably downloaded the .NET Framework 2.0 which includes msvcr80, but triggers the false error report from Norton. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have more questions, as I don’t read this forum regularly. Martyn Lovell Development Lead Visual C++ Libraries martynl@microsoft.com

a) This is the beta 2 version of msvcr80.dll. Don't install it. b) This file should never be installed in system32 (except on Win9x and Windows 2000). c) The .NET framework already installs the copy correctly (in WinSxS). d) The correct source for an msvcr80 binary is from your application provider, not from this site. Martyn

This would shed some light as to why Tweaknow didn’t find the entries you mentioned. So I think you’re ok and there aren’t any problems. To verify, you could also do a search for “msvcr80.dll” on your system.

Best Regards…

Thank you Ardvark. That letter was definitely important. I had read not to just put the .dll file in randomly, and will ignore Windoctor’s alert concerning it.
I was afraid that I may have problems deleting the other files that Tweaknow found, so I will leave them be for now. The directions do say that Tweaknow Standard does backup files and to use the icon on the main page to restore, but of course I couldn’t find it. All I found was the icon I mentioned before to restore the professional version. Maybe I have to delete the files first and then the icon would show up, but I didn’t like to take the chance.

Hi Roro…

You’re welcome.

I have no idea why there isn’t an easily accessable restore function. What do they mean by “main page?” ???

Best Regards…

Hi Roro -

If you have made a restore point with TweakNow Standard (free version), the opening window (GUI) in TweakNow should look like my mine as in the pkoto below. This has to be done when TWS is first installed. You should have been asked about this during or just after the installation of TweakNow Standard.

That is what I have, but as you can see the still says TweakNow Professional. Does that mean the standard version also backs files up?

RoRo

Hi Roro -

Yes, Standard also does back-ups. I have never had to use one of the restore points but I have now done one so that I can post photos of this for you. Please click the photos below and you will see that I had 7 restore points though I have never done one myself except for the original. The other restore points were created when I removed whatever item was needed to be removed. So, you should not need to worry.
