Mulitple Virus Infections

Hello,

Recently, on my PC, I noticed that I was getting redirected to bogus sites and other things, and that my standard MSE software suite wasn’t working anymore. Further, when I tried googling any sort of solution to the problem, it also misdirected me. I was able to download your program. It directed me to reboot, and then did a system scan during that reboot, where it found both the JS:pdfka-gen virus and the win32:sirefef-pl virus and one more than I cannot recall and did not write down. Your program deleted all the infected files, including ones that were in the Windows folder. I have since changed all my passwords and whatnot. The problems that I encountered no longer manifest themselves in my browser, though MSE still refused to work. I thought this might’ve been a conflict between MSE and your program, so I uninstalled it to prevent conflict.

I just completed a software scan of the affected computer and it returned with no threat found. I was just wondering if there’s any way to verify these viruses have been purged. I have seen in other threads that the only real way to know for sure is to do a complete system wipe and reload. Is that accurate as well? What risk do I take by not doing a system wipe, if I choose not to?

Thanks very much for your help and this program- was a very simple way to diagnose and eliminate the apparent threat to my computer. I have since downloaded your client for my Mac and will be singing your praises. Thanks again!

Please attach your logs. (AdwCleaner, MBAM, OTL and aswMBR…!!)

Never install multiple AV as it will make your comp slower, give mysterious windows errors, give false positive detections....etc etc
it found both the JS:pdfka-gen virus and the win32:sirefef-pl virus and one more than I cannot recall and did not write down.
Siref is a rootkit that have given lots of work for the removal experts here......and you need an expert to remove it, so follow the guide Asyn gave you

Logs are attached- please let me know if I did something incorrect.

The log for AdwCleaner is missing.

Sorry. See attached.

Sorry for the double post- I thought of another question. Is it safe for me to use this computer like I did before? In other words, are my files and whatnot still vulnerable? I ran the boot scan again today and it discovered another Java based trojan, I think, which it deleted. Subsequent full scans while the computer was completely up found nothing and everything seemed to be working fine, though I will certainly wait for the opinion of ya’ll. Thanks again for all the help!

hi km5ce,

The problem with having a rootkit such as Sirefef is that, as long as it is active, more malware can and will be downloaded. Safe and effective removal requires specialised tools and expert guidance, as a rootkit is difficult to detect and even harder to remove. Note: I did not say impossible, but if you are not a malware removal expert, it often is.

Please continue on with the needed logs and the fix will be made just for you.

I need to run Coombofix on the system as it is hiding in the recycle bin, plus a lot of system registry keys have been subverted

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

THEN

Please run a fresh FSS scan

Attached are the logs. Actions requested were performed without error(at least that I know) and computer seems to be running as well as it did prior to the running of Combofix. Please let me know what else I can do! Thanks!

OK that fixed the registry keys, how is the computer now … Any redirects ?

Okay, no more redirects that I’ve noticed. Then again, that ceased when I ran the initial bootscan that revealed the Sirefef virus and had those corrupted files deleted through Avast. Am I clean?

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [emptytemp] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the “x” and “/”) then click OK

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Go to control panel
[*]Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

[*]Go to Control Panel and select System
[*]Select System
[*]On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
[*]Select System Protection Tab
[*]Select Create at the bottom
[*]Type in a name i.e. Clean
[*]Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

[*]GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
[*]Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
[*]Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
[*]For a few moments the system will make some calculations
[*]Select the More Options tab
[*]In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
[*]Select Delete on the pop up
[]Select OK
[
]Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif

Malwarebytes. Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit

[*]Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?

Keep safe

Thanks! Looks like everything is good to go. I keep getting system prompts that I’ve gotten before back when I first installed the system(ie, do you want to allow AIM access past your firewall, do you want firefox as your main browser, do you want to allow this program to run etc.) I just want to confirm these are normal(and I haven’t seen any mysterious programs or anything pop up either)

Also, Java update has been bugging me for a while, is it safe to finally upgrade that?

Thanks again!

The warnings are from where combofix set the security to default, so allow the ones you normally do.

I did not see that you had Java installed, but rather than use the update prompt I would recommend that you get the latest version direct from the website http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
