multiple blank page tabs

I just installed Avast free and have MBAM premium. I know nothing about setting these up right, but why am I getting all these blank page tabs open every time I open a link or webpage? Has something to do with Avast as it just started. And am I supposed to leave my Avast in passive mode because of my MBAM?

Did you remove any (pre)installed av before installing avast ?
Did you set a exclusion for avast in MBam and vica versa ?

I did remove McAfee but the Avast installed fine with the passive mode with MBAM left on. I read many posts that they could run together. I assume I am to leave passive mode on Avast, but don’t know anything about doing exclusions! Just puzzled why all the blank page tabs keep appearing along the top…just started after Avast free.
