multiple "can't find file abcdef" on startup

I don’t know if this a virus or not but on booting up I get multiple messages " can’t find abcdef file" with increasing frequency. I cleared out some of these mystery files that appeared in the startup folder but more keep coming back. I installed anast4 to no avail. Please help, this driving me crazy!!

Hi,

please give the exact message(s), especially full path/folder/filename of the missing files

did you detect/remove a virus recently ? if so, which ?

try avast Cleaner → www.avast.com

and use regcleaners to weed out obsolete entries in the registry
→ search this board or google for regClean

Which Win do you have ?
are all windowsupdates applied ?

Hello Whocares:
Thanks for responding. I have windows 98 and the message is under the heading “missing shortcut”. The message is “windows is searching for vfxcb23.exe. To locate file yourself click browse”. If I hesitate before closing this out another message appears like “the item vfxcb23.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed …” This sequence of events repeats for different files. At the moment I am getting about 30 of these.
By the way I tried avast cleaner which found no viruses. Hope I answered all of your questions.

Nope, but try RegCleaners anyway

Downloaded regcleaners. It ran for 2 hours and I didn’t get any messages. However must have done something. There was a reduction in the number of “phantom files” on subsequent bootup. But its still there!

Thanks for your help!!
