i downloaded avast 5 free from download.com for xp sp3 32 bit. can i install the same downloaded file on win 7 64 bit or i have to download a fresh avast 5 free setup file.

No you can use the same installation file, it is compatible with all the supported OSes, win2k (with prerequisites), XP, Vista and win7, 32bit and 64bit versions.
