Murky Downloads by AVAST

(A similar thread was posted by me 4 days ago , but I have started this new owing to the seriousness of it. If at all the earlier thread may please be locked.)

Today I had to reinstall AVAST 1483 in my XP SP3 since I restored my system to an earlier date and AVAST would not function. It was not a system restore but a simple registry restore thru ERDNT software.

After installing AVAST ofcourse updated the signatures and I got the message of signatures upto date from the maintenance page.

Then this whole massive download of say 60mb by AVAST I observed. No other web based programs were open then. I immediately turned off the Streaming updates , reputation and even the signature updates.

At the next restart once again there was a huge download which I find is attributed only to AVAST directly or thru svchost. I could not waste my bandwidth on some fidgety business. Nearly after some 15mb of transfer I could wait no longer , shutdown went to safe start and disabled both the AVAST service and AVAST startup. Now I am left with no Antivirus.

Someone from the devolopers may kindly let know as to what downloads are being indulged upon. I have been using AVAST for quiet long and am not jumping to any conclusions. But a proper answer will favor all.

I also have xp 3 on my computer and have also noticed an incredible amount of hardrive activity at startup recently. I am curious what all that is about. I definitely don’t remember anything like that with Avast 7. Any one have any ideas?

I am really surprised / aghast at the silence and non- response of the seasoned forum patrons. Has the thumbs down icon put everyone off. Then I will try to get that off which was infact to express extreme displeasure at the unaccounted nor unacknowledged downloads by AVAST.
If this is not sorted out soon , perhaps I will lose my respect for AVAST (if that mattered!)

So this turns out a tacit way of some trick indulged by AVAST. Surprisingly no one wants to reply perhaps underscoring that the issue is known to be.
Might be it was a mistake to expect too much of this forum ,where the faithfuls don’t even bear the faintest hint of criticism ever indulging only in self bloated praise.
Pity the forum has fallen too…

Do you have activated the Software Updater to download automaticly available updates?

DJBone

Yes Software updater has no been activated.

Restoring the registry via erunt is similar to doing a system restore, and if Avast self defense module was not disabled then you will get some weird results

Lets reinstall Avast

Download Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast

@essexboy.
I had uninstalled AVAST ,used awsclear and AVAST 1483 is fully kicking again. What is not acceptable is the gobbling downloads for no reasons by AVAST

Garbled downloads are usually the fault of some of the following:
Use of a Download Manager.
Bad connection through wifi or a problem with your ISP.

If it was an Avast problem, the forum would be lit up like a Christmas tree.

I am convinced AVAST is the culprit here. With AVAST uninstalled my internet network seems still. By the way there are a lot of bemused users in the Software Updater thread down below venting out. Might be the cause to my issue is the same. No joke.Let the experts confirm…

I’m not here to argue.
You made a statement and I gave you an answer.

I welcome your opinion and I do read your posts in other threads as well :).I summed up my personal experience.I too am an AVAST fan.

All I can think of is that Avast found a problem that required it to download the entire virus data base again

So,

I would like to add to the OP problem. I too had murky issues with avast.

To Avast staff, you will notice I am a paying customer (check your accounts, I bought 3 licenses today (not yet activated)).

I suspect it is dodgey dealings when expiration occurs to the licenses. This is no April fool.

That could be it. I had to reinstall Avast! a couple of day ago and after the reboot Avast! downloaded 90MB virus data base. It looked weird at the time because it has never happened to me before, but it has not done it again and my VPS are normal and I have my defs VPS folder with the regular 100+MB.

I had that happen on a computer that I had not used for several month.
Update took a long time because of all the VPS downloads.
I don’t intend to let the computer sit that long again.

You may be true. In my experience I had it in Win 7 x 64 and then WIN XP. If AVAST is compelled to download an entire 90 mb VDB then it is a pretty serious issue which needs attention on top priority.
From what you guys confirm , it (massive downloads) seems to be a very general thing which others might have just overlooked. In plain terms it is a joke on us.
From my side I have totally uninstalled the modules in the middle column , the left column being compulsorily required to see if there is any improvement.
Whatever , I just hope AVAST gets to the bottom of it soon.

They are not a general thing but rather an unusual exception.

I have never had avast download the full virus definitions database as it has always been able to download the incremental updates, which are generally measured in KBs not massive MBs.

A corrupt update function could be an issue but this generally presents itself in error messages when trying to update and not downloading the complete database as that to is likely to fail since the update function being corrupt. This would require a manual download of the full database and within that executable file a means of repairing the corruption. But you would know about that as it would require a manual download.

An unusual exception for atleast three persons on this thread! (For humor only :))
I do not get this thing about manual download? I never had AVAST inform me that the database needs to be dowloaded again. Also when such things are happening how do I find what AVAST is downloading. Any logs or interactive message? Just to inform that mine was over the top install in the first case for both Win 7 x 64 and XP and both had this issue.
The second time I had uninstalled AVAST completely in my XP system ran AWS clear and then installed fresh. Despite that the same downloads issue. In my case it seems to be just compelled downloading…
