Must stop then start Web Shield after reboot to allow surfing

New box, win7 64 bit, avast free version. Installed Avast last week, updated with latest revs since install. After a reboot I found I must stop, then start the Web Shield to allow either Firefox Or IE to access the Internet. However, ping works fine after a reboot so I know the network is reachable, after a boot I ping google.com just to check if it works.

The browsers will work fine until the system is rebooted, at which time I have to stop and start Web Shield again.

Two steps:

1:

Download and install the Version 6.0.1044 (click on “Free” in my signature). No need to uninstall current version.
Reboot and check.

If step 1 don’t help then proceed to

Step 2:

In Avast, got to → Settings (upper right corner) → Troubleshooting (left menu of pop up window). Select “Start Avast services only after other…”
Reboot and check.

Did that cure the problem?

Thanks for the quick reply, tried the steps. Installing version 6.0.1044 did not fix the problem. Step 2 did work. It is surprising no one else has reported this as this box is a very basic install with Service Pack 1.

What risks are opened up by starting the services later?

I do not know, frankly speaking.

I think the risks aren’t too high.

Was this a new and clean install of win7? No other AV on the system before?

Please, just to be sure:

Click on MBAM in my signature and download the free version Malwarebytes Antimalware.
Install it.
Start it and do an update via it’s GUI.
Start a quick scan (takes only a few minutes).
A log will appear after scanning, please post that here.

Thx

Ok I think I’ve figured out at least what happened to me. Over the weekend I updated my wife’s box to service pack 1 for win7. It had been using Avast with no problems for months. As soon as it booted up after installing the service pack no browser could access the web, although ping worked. The fix being to stop and start the Web Shield. I now have it set to start the Avast services after others and the browsers work fine after a reboot. With my box I went from install to service pack 1 then installed Avast and had the problem immediately.

I ran Malwarebytes, no problems found on either box.

You’re not the only one - but funny though, because I run Win 7 x64 SP1 as well and I do have no problems at all.

Anyway, good it’s working now.
