My appreciation to avast! (Comparing avast! with McAfee)

Okay, so most of my family uses McAfee, since my dad renews a subscription every year. I have a computer which is not good with McAfee. Although, I bought a big book of Windows Hacks and saw a recommendation for avast! and started using it ever since!

Now, avast! is #1 in antivirus software (YES! YES!) according to Cnet’s download.com, and McAfee is #17 in antivirus software (wah wah WAH), also according to download.com. Avast! is still better than McAfee when it’s free (in my opinion, though). Now, McAfee DOES automatically remove trojans, but for me, it’s most likely considered a false alarm. It’s still annoying how it’s hard for me to use McAfee!

So, avast! is epic lightweight software that has shields like web shields, mail shield (I think it only works with email programs, though), etc. While McAfee doesn’t have much, and clutters your HDD space. Also, avast! has a nice little feature called the sandbox, which virtually runs suspicious programs, while McAfee doesn’t, but just says “Potentially unwanted software has been detected” and still lets this “Potentially unwanted software” run.

Avast! does have a lot of false alarms, but it doesn’t remove files, it just tells you. At least it’s less annoying than McAfee removing so called Trojans (it might remove some real ones, though). Avast! also lets you put infected files into something called the chest, which is like HECK for viruses. Although the viruses are still in your computer, they won’t infect it.

Avast! can be free and you can optionally pay for Internet Security and such, while McAfee wants to drain your pockets every year. Think of that as a security tax on your PC!

Thank you, avast, for some epic reliable software I can always count on! ;D

Thanks for the feedback

well.....PUP is not virus......and avast PUP scan setting is default OFF

and McAfee…and all other AV does not know if you want it and installed it…or someone else did it secretly
so your AV will only give you the warning…and you must find out if this is a program you want or not

Hi Pondus,

Well put, PUP is not a virus as long as one knows what the software does on your computer. When you haven’t installed it yourself willingly and some other program placed it on your comp, then it really could be be a PUP, meaning a “possibly unwanted program”. Therefore until you know what it is or what it does on your computer, you should run such a program sandbox. If you have found that it is harmless or asked here if you cannot decide you can allow it to run normally,
If a program seems to be an unwanted/undesirable program in the true sense of that word, you better put it into the chest or remove it after some time when found not essential for operating the OS,
