My Avast 4.8 Home Doesn't Update Automatically

I installed Avast 4.8 yesterday and it updated automatically but today when I turn on the pc it doesn’t want to update automatically (no blue message and nothing). Then I updated it manually to the most recent update file. But why avast doesnt update automatically today? what I have to do?

 Hi :

First, we need to know the name of your previous antivirus program AND IF
you used its “Removal Tool” IF One exists !?

2nd: “Automatic Updates” are usually done AFTER selecting that Setting in
the “Program Settings”, which is accessed by RIGHT-clicking on the “a” ball ;
have you done that !?

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

It’s strange that you can manually update but not automatically…

There wasn’t an automatic update earlier today (so you wouldn’t have got a blue notification), but there just has been one. So that might account for it, if you remained on-line it would be 4 hours before it checked again, so again it is possible that you did a manual update before the next update check.

Provided you aren’t getting a Red notice pop-up (update failure) you are probably OK, certainly leave it for a day or so and see if it does auto update.

My previous antivirus progam was AVG Free and I dont removed it with his removal tool. Yes it says automatic in the progam update settings.

Please, be sure: you didn’t remove AVG (only disabled it) or, in fact, you’ve uninstalled it?

yeah I uninstalled it

Like David said, automatic updates could not be more than daily (or two).
Check your avast logs (right click the ‘a’ blue icon) on ‘Notice’ folder. Isn’t there any automatic update logged there?

hi there I’m experiencing this issue since yesterday i can manual update but i haven’t got the you have been update message for a while. my other pc dose it but for some reason not this one what wrong?

Check into avast Log Viewer in ‘Warning’ section if there are automatic updates logged there.

nope none in there is that bad? or dose that mean i’m ok

Hmmm… if you’ve set to automatically update, than it’s bad because it’s not updating…
What did you set into Program Settings > Update (Basic)?

Automatic is what it’s set at. should i uninstall avast and do a reinstall it was updating itself up till yesterday.

Not meaning to hijack this thread
But
What Firewall?
using zone alarm

On my system which also was previously AVG

after clicking manual update
OR
after a day or so when auto update should have run
update will run
if I turn Firewall off for a brief period of time
or
If I reboot

I may watch this thread to see how you solve this one
you think

about the only things I have left to do is run the Norton, Panda, and other removal tools- McAfee
This system has had em all at one time or another

This may have been asked already but in addition to AVG did your system come pre-installed with any AV?

ok nope no pre-installed av here i install my own operating systems so should i uninstall avast and do a reinstall.

Not that you SHOULD
but you could try it
I could not really tell if you just uninstalled AVG or uninstalled- rebooted ran AVG removal tool > installed Avast

If you did not do the complete drill
(and you are not using zone alarm)
it’s worth a try
First download the tools and make sure the Avast you have is the latest

uninstall Avast from add remove programs
reboot
run the Avast removal tool
reboot
run the AVG removal tool
reboot
If me I’d run the Antivir removal tool along the way- report if it finds anything- it’s a registry cleaner optimized for old AV removal
remove any mention of AVAST in your Firewall - which is it?
now fresh install Avast
reboot
check the about avast tab in the blue ball for a couple of days and see if autoupdate is working

no big rush on this if manual updating is working
you could wait till next week and see if anyone agrees with me or has a better idea
BTW
you might want to remove avast from your firewall and make it re enable first- you might get lucky and would take a lot less time
do tell me if either of the hacks I proposed above work
no manual update for a couple of days- patience
toggle your firewall off
see if autoupdate runs
turn av back on again
thanks

i never had avg on this install of windows just avast so i think i will try the avast uninstall tool were do i get it?

Avast website under “programs”
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

antivir tool is here
http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/3/avira_antivir_removal_tool.html
it is a general purpose tool so should not find much after running the above
they also have an anti-rootkit and boot sector repair tools
no idea how good they are but removal tool works

see ya

i ran the removal tool in safe mode as suggested and then rebooted and reinstalled avast and yes it auto update itself its working again  thank you all for your help.

great news
just for closure did you run the avast or the antivir tool in safe mode?
