My avast! Home edition had also recently changed to a longer startup time. My configuration: win98, AVG Free, Outpost f/w and RegProtect all started along with avast! at boot. Initial time required: 30 seconds. This boot time increased to 2:30 with no changes to my system except regular updates to AVG, OP and avast!.
I have had two emails with viruses attached sitting in a “safe” folder (NOT quarentined) for some time now. Never opened, never executed. They were being noted in a temp file regularly generated by avast!. I deleted the infected emails and emptied the (Netscape) trash.
Reboot, and MY boot time is back to “normal”.
I have NO idea if this will assist others in their quest to resolve their boot/startup problems…but nothing ventured, nothing gained
Thanks for providing a free AV for home users.
Cheers, tomZ
Does this mean that AVG starts up along with Avast? If it does then you must disable AVG from starting up when you boot. If you wish you can keep AVG and just use it as an on-demand scanner but two on-access scanners will cause a lot of problems.
Hi Technical, thanks for your reply but I need a little clarification I’m afraid, do you mean that NT systems can not have two AVs installed even if one is only used as an on-demand scanner?
Sorry for the newbie question but I am a newbie trying my hardest to understand. I’ve been on the net for 15 months now and knew very little about security on the web and I seem to learn some thing new everyday.
AVG starts at boot with Avast, but only Avast is configured as a “real-time” scanner. I use AVG for its Boot scan, scan on demand, and hook to scan downloads.
Delta, like Tom wrote, you could have but, there is a lot of buts… You can have an incompatibility or even do not have some files to be scanned because system mess the drivers it should load to scan a file. For instance, in the past, NAV (only on-demand) prevents avast to scan exe files under DOS). Take care, you never know.
About what Tom posted, you can have avast doing the same - and better - as AVG:
Boot time scanning (or even only memory and startup itens)
Scanning on-demand
Scan downloads (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe)
