I just saw today Windows informing me that my avast is out of date. I’ve tried manually updating the program and virus defs via the interface and Avast just sits there. I waited as long as an hour and nothing. My program is currently 8.0.1500 with virus defs 131020-0. I have high speed internet with a Dell XPS 8500, 8GB RAM running Windows 7 pro. My husband’s dell updated to Avast 2014 with no issues. I tried using the avast VPS util (picked 2014) but that’s didn’t work.

And why don’t you save your settings and try an installation from scratch?
I’d recommend you try a clean install of v9. (I fear you have a corrupt install)
- Download the right aswclear and the appropriate program
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe
v8 and below : http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
v9: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
- Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
- Uninstall in safe mode using aswclear (v8 or below) or avastclear (v9) [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel just install it]
- Download and install your version
- Reboot.
You can insert license file during install or after reboot. (If using paid version)
You’d rather stay with the current version, report bugs and then they’ll be fixed.

I looked around and didn’t see how to save my settings. Then when I considered just wiping 8 to put 9 (aka 2014), windows refused to uninstall it (got divide by 0 error).
Alikhan, what you explained I saw your response in another post and tried that. It worked. Thanks
To save your Avast settings…
Open Avast UI>Settings>General>Scroll Down
First “Backup Settings” and save the file to somewhere you remember. Once reinstalled, same phase but use “Restore Settings” and locate the file you saved earlier.
