My Avast is open to mail threats

Win7, Chrome browser, DuckDuck Go Search engine.
Some time ago my Thunderbird mail gave over downloading mail and put up a warning that the “connection to the server was broken” after research, I was advised to stop the Avast Free email shield which has actually worked and now T-Bird downloads all my mail from the server, but surely one of the key features of Avast is now missing and I am open to hidden mail threats, is there a proper Avast fix for this security hole? Regards Robert

It must be a bug introduced in 21.5, which was already resolved by a micro-update.
Update to the latest version, reboot your machine (twice in some cases) and check the issue is still there.

Many thanks for your reply and help, my version was 21.4.62 I have now updated and installed the latest 21.5.247 and did the reboot, the Mail Shield is now on and I will get back to you with an update after proving the Avast mail shield system, regards Robert

Hi again, I have just had an email that told me “Thunderbird has disconnected from the server” so by re-enabling the mail checker the problem has returned.
I have used Avast for over12 yrs and it was always good but now it is creating a weak point for mail baddies, regards Robert

  • What is the exact error message?
  • What version/build of Avast do you use?
  • What version/build of Windows do you use?

The latest Avast build should be 21.5.6354.675 (21.5.2470.675).

Hi sorry for the delay, I have been waiting for an email alert which does not seem to come when an answer is posted.

1.The message is given in Mozilla Thunderbird, which states “connection to the server is broken” this massage is given when downloading emails, to get around the problem I have to stop the Avast mail shield
2. I have the latest v 21.5.2470.675 installed
3. I use Windows7 Pro, which Avast has worked with since Win7 was launched

Regards Robert

According to build number, it should work, strange…

Does this FAQ steps work?

Troubleshooting email client warnings about invalid server certificates

Many thanks, Non, I have followed the step you kindly provided and although one of the last steps was not actually word for word as one of the tick boxes was missing, but I did get the message “This certificate is already installed as a Certificate authority” so I take it that the process has completed, now I have re-activated the mail scan again and I will report back after a short trial, best regards Robert

Hi all, as I feared the last attempt, unfortunately, did not work and I have had to turn off the mail scanner again to get my mail to download and open, any more ideas most welcome, regards Robert

Sorry to hear that, I don’t know why it doesn’t work for you.

NON, should your link not be for read permission only rather than edit ?

The link is indeed a copy from bob3160’s, and Google adds “edit” automatically…

Strange I always thought sharing links were read only.

File is read-only, needs permission to actually edit files.

Anyway I removed “edit” from the URL.
