my computer is freezing!

Hello,

I downloaded avast on my desktop computer yesterday night. The computer has been freezing every time I try to boot up. The furthest it will get (I have win XP on a fast computer) is that it will come to the desktop and the big balloon will open up explaining what the different symbols mean for avast!. After that, I can move my mouse around (I see the arrow), but I am not really able to click on anything, including the start menu. I have already tried restarting in Safe mode, but I am not able to get beyond the screen where all the files that are being loaded up are shown. I feel like I need to somehow get avast off my computer, but I’m not able to access the control panel add/remove programs in order to do so. I brought on a floppy the clearav4.exe program. I do not have enough time before the computer freezes in order to run it. My problem may have to do with the fact that two AV programs are installed on my computer (avast + PANDA). I have tried to uninstall PANDA (a few months ago), but I guess it didn’t go away completely. Please help as there is data I need to retrieve off my computer.

Thank you.

Remove Panda completely in Safe mode. See if that solves it.

Hi David, can you use control+alt+delete to show the task manager? If so can you then stop any processes associated with Panda? If the mouse doesn’t work use the cursor keys and tab to highlight the processes and buttons and enter to select them. If you can could you then uninstall Panda? Or run msconfig and go to the startup tab and disable all the Panda processes from running at the next boot, shut down and restart and hopefully Panda will not be running allowing you to uninstall it.

Delta.

Thanks for your suggestions:

  1. I am not able to even get into safe mode. After a list of files flashes on the screen, it doesn’t move from there.
  2. I don’t know how much time I have before everything really slows down. After I get into windows, I have about 20-25 sec before everything freezes. I’ll try to use CTRL-ALT-DEL in that time, but I’don’t know if I’ll have time to find the right processes and disable them.
  3. Same for running msconfig.

Could you get access to your disk in some other way? (booting from a CD/diskette)?

problem solved!
I was finally able to get into safe mode.

Take this position to remove Panda and avast.
After that, choose just one. I suggest avast, of course

Do you know what changed to allow you booting in safe mode?
Maybe the answer could be useful for other users 8)
