It all started when i downloaded “Norton Internet Security” for my pc.i downloaded it then installed it.And i had Mcaffe before but the Norton installer unistalled it.Then my computer started freezing, then it completely froze so i turned it off and uninstalled norton in Safe Mode, then i went back to normal windows and the norton desktop icon was gone but in the bar on the bottom it had the norton icon then it completely froze again.SO i turned it off again and went to “Last Known Good Configuration” and it was finally gone when i logged back in…Then this morning it was back and it froze everything again…and right now im using it in SAFE MODE.
What shoul i do? ???
Ensure all remnants of Norton and McAfee are gone:
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
You didn’t say which McAfee version, so here are the various tools:
- McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

After all this try and boot normally and see if you can get in and see if avast is working.
If not you may need to reinstall it too.
OK right now im in normal windows and i did what you told me then my computer froze the only thin that i can move right now is browse the internet and d avast, and the rest is frozen…And there is a little icon on my toolbar dat looks like a green globe with lines across in the bottom just in top of the toolbar there is like a gray “object dock” lookin thing with no icons…
what should i do now? ???
Sorry I’m not familiar with either of those things you mention.
If you ran those uninstall tools ?
You would need to reboot, if you haven’t done so you should.
I think you have something else going on over and above the possible AV conflicts.
All I can suggest is clean reinstall of avast, but I fear as I mentioned above that might not be it:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
-
- Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
OK i did everything you told me to and right now im scanning my computer with Avast,
i just hope that works :-\
OK, that’s a good start.
Hopefully no more freezing, etc. ?
Just as a precautionary measure:
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).
That’s me for the night, almost 1:30 a.m. here.

Sorry for takin a lot time to answer…but. ;D. i had to recover my pc to factory settings. So now im starting from scratch. And right now im downloading AVAST.And much thanks for all ur help :)…Do you have any good advices??
i had to recover my pc to factory settings. So now im starting from scratchDid you computer come with McAfee preinstalled? Is it back after the recovery? If so you must remove it before You install Avast
You will fiend the McAfee removal tool here, it is Nr.17a http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
yes it did came with MCAFFE preinstalled, why do i need to uninstall mcaffe?? ???
Yes, if you restored it to the factory settings McAfee will also have been restored and for the same reasons given before needs to be removed.
Check the windows add remove programs for the McAfee entry and uninstall, reboot and run the removal tool I gave in my first reply.
Can i have SUPERANTI-SPYWARE and AVAST at the same time…OR what combination could keep me protected?? AND did my pc delete any viruses i had when i restored it to factory?? ???
Most likely yes. As for the combination, I guess DavidR has gone to bed. I recommend you using the notification function. Meanwhile, you may like to search the boards about the combination of applications compatible to Avast!.
- If you check my signature below my posts you will see I use both those without problem
The general rule is only one resident anti-virus type installed, the same is generally accepted for resident anti-spy/malware programs, but you should be able to have one resident anti-virus and one resident anti-spyware.
- I have no idea what your factory restore does so I can’t say, it would depend on where the viruses were and exactly what the factory restore does and both of those are unknown to me.
I’m just about to call it a night, just after 3.am.
I think carlosBP used recovery disk which is often considered as the last resort for maker PCs, which, generally speaking, erases all the data on the hard disk(s) and installs OS and software, which reverts back the whole data on the PC when it was being shipped.
Yes, I aware of what ‘some’ recovery disks do, some are not so aggressive and if carlosBP has also repartitioned his disk that too could make a difference.
Oh, I didn’t know that. I almost imagined you were too accustomed to building PCs to know even the existence of recovery disks… ;D
He He, I have never had a system that has come with a recovery disk, but I do know about them and the different approaches of different companies.
I have always insisted on a Genuine Windows CD, even if OEM when I buy a system and the OS together. Obviously if I build it I would be buying the OS CD, OEM or Retail.
