my computer starting up on its own during the night

Hi has anyone had the problem of the computer starting up from hibernation mode during the night?

my computer is normally left on all the time but i use to put it in sleep mode but a few days ago it started waking up from sleep so after trying to find out what was the problem and could not find the cause i started putting it in hibernation but it has now started starting from hibernation mode as well and i cannot find the problem does anyone know what could cause the problem, does Avast do any scanning during the night?

regards Poppy Ann.

You can check your network interface (wireless and / or cable) devices to see if they are setup to wake your computer. Other than that, I have never had Avast wake my system (either version 8 or 9).

to poppyann:

from ui status status page click scans. from dropdown, check each listed scan. click setting (blue), scheduling. if “scheddule this scan” is ticked, make sure "wake up the system to start the scan (if in sleep mode) is unticked. this may also apply to hibernate as it is modified sleep mode.
these instructions for avast 2014, but similar for avast 8. you did not mention which avast you are using.

Avast wakes up for updating the virus database - you can find it in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Task Schedule. When you viewing a task there, you can see an option to wake computer to perform the task, but the task Avast scheduled, doesn’t have it checked! I guess the program does it itself - that’s something we should adress the developers about!

There is something you can do about it: go to Control Panel>Power Options>Change when the computer sleeps>Change Advanced power settings, scroll down to Sleep, collapse it, collapse Allow wake up timers, and there you want it to be disabled for which ever source of power you want!

Hi I can never understand why home users leave there pc on 24/7. You know of course that fans, Hard drives, Power Supply’s and all PC parts have a number of hours or Days that these parts are expected to run before they start to have problems. So run your PC for 8 hours a Day or 24 hours a day what is going to make the parts last longer. Have a big storm at night when your sleeping PC gets a power surge because you did not shut it down. I know I will get flac over this but the truth is the truth.

I cant understand why people " FureousGeorge " answer 6 month old topics that the OP never responded to

Hi hehe I must remember to look at the date on these posts sorry about that LOL I am old what can I say.

I work for a “hardware” PC company and been in the biz 25+ years…this is really not true…it was in past though.
PCs now-a-days run less than a light bulb when idle…in sleep (I hate hibernate) almost non-existent.
As far as durability…it is harder on your machine’s components doing cold boots than anything else.
Also, with all the software updates it is better to have things updating/scheduled real-time so things don’t bog down every boot.
Other than “bad” hardware a PC should be able to run 24/7 for 4+ years without incident…after that you are past needing a new one to keep pace with performance/software/etc. needs anyway.

And yes I have been in the pc business since 1990. Sorry but I am tired of the A+ techs outlook that everyone needs a new pc it just needs to be fixed right. You sound like the guys that work at staples LOL. Please enjoy your day. My gaming PC is of course a bit newer.
