my first post - question about screensaver scanning and standby

Greetings,
This is my first question. It is in regards to using the screensaver scanning mode. I have selected the Avast screensaver mode (note: system is running WIN XP Home edition). I would like the PC to go into standby after 2 hours, but it does not. It remains in the screensaver mode with virus scanning.

Is it possible to use the Avast screensaver scanning, and then move into standby after a period of time? If so, how is this accomplished.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

I don’t even know if by selecting a normal screen saver you can set a 2 hour time and have it go into standby, that surely is the whole point of selecting a screen saver.

Personally I see no point in using a screen saver (outside of the avast scanning) as I couldn’t care less what is on my screen when I’m not there and I would much rather it went directly into standby - which is what I do if I’m about to leave my computer I hit the standby key on my keyboard.

I run a standard scan without archives every week as a part of my weekly system maintenance, it doesn’t take long and I feel any more frequently than this is really a waste.

I don’t know if your scanning is set to loop so on completion of the scan it shouldn’t resume the scan. So if under normal circumstances after two hours a normal screen saver would go into standby, then avast screen saver should too. Obviously if it is set to loop then there would be activity and no standby.

Did you set your standby period into the Energy settings of Windows?

I set the Avast screensaver to start after 20 minutes idle time. I set the power saving setting to turn off the monitor at 1 hour idle time, and to drop into standby after 2 hours.

The power saving for the monitor works fine, but it will not move into standby. If I run a normal screensaver, this works as planned.

It seems as if the Avast screensaver scan affects this, as if scanning is “activity”, yet the function of turning off the monitor does work. So why not the move to standby?

What I am aiming for is a couple hours of scanning, and then dropping into standby to save power if the PC is unused for more than 2 hours.

The activity in this context means keyboard or mouse movement… So, it should go to standby.
If you manually ask for your computer to standby, does it work?

Yes, manually it works, and with other screensavers it works too.

Actually, this has been an issue for a long time, and I just decided to join and hit the forum to see if it can be sorted out. Otherwise, Avast has been running without issues.

I think the no activity as far as power saving goes is different to avast’s in regard of when the screen saver scan would start.

So if there is a scan running in the background that activity would stop the power saving options from cutting it if the avast scan is set to loop as I said earlier.

OK, I tested with the “loop” feature disabled, and this seems to work as desired. I will make a few more tests, but think we are in good shape.

I though that would be the case, as it is effectively like say a back-up running in the background the power saving wouldn’t cut in until it finished.
