My question is an unusual one, but it is about securing my Dad's computer

My Dad is 75 yrs old and he can use a computer but he thinks he needs to download these programs for driver updates. I have told him many times these programs are that a problem waiting to happen but he ignores me. I have had to restore the computer 6 times and had to replace the HDD once. I seen today downloading patches for a old game that was made for WINDOWS XP or before. He will not listen to me and thinks I am running his life. I need to know a way to protect him. He thinks right clicking the file and scanning the file is ok but he has no idea when a file can be a decoy. How do I block the websites he is going on?

You can sett up the router with OpenDNS .... you can then add urls to block in the online dashboard, and that you can do from anywhere, just log in from where ever you are

OK, great idea thanks now I bet your going to tell me I am screwed but I forgot my dad either has inprivate browsing going on or the check box in the IE settings for the history to be erased after he exits the browser.

Even if he surfs in “private mode” he still needs to go through a DNS server somewhere.
OpenDNS is a great idea. I use it as do many forum members.

if you sett up the router then any device conected to that router will go true OpenDNS

But you have to turn off avast secure DNS in his computer or it will use that

For the most part if drivers are giving you (your dad) no problem, then the old saying, if it isn’t broke then don’t fix it. If these drivers are from windows update, typically they are optional updates.

I don’t know if you have a drive imaging program installed on his computer as that is generally more reliable and easier for you to recover than using system restore if that is what you were recovering.
