I quarantined only temp files and .exe files from programs I don’t use much, no system files, before I suspected something was wrong. Now I can’t access the internet to get the Avast fix. I can’t use explorer to look at my system. I can’t use anything in the Control Panel. I can’t use restore points. I can’t even shut down or restart without the thing just locking up. Starting any program causes an hour glass for a couple of minutes and then nothing. Task Manager shows nothing active and no memory being used. I restored from the chest, got “files restored successfully” but of course they are not. I suppose the place to start is with the new Avast update but how do I get it on this system without internet connection? Can I download it to a jump drive from another system and plug it in my screwed up system, assuming explorer will even recognize it that is.
Have you tried Windows Safe Mode With Networking?
Also, you can indeed download the latest defs from another computer and transport them using a USB key or similar device.

Once you have the latest definitions applied, please try restoring the files from the chest, and rebooting the system.
Thanks

Thanks I’ll try all that tonight, but I don’t see how my system could get so screwed up when I only effected temp files and a few rarely used programs.
wow ur pc must be really screwed up but i know what you mean because the same thing happened to me.My pc froze and once it froze i couldn’t do nothing. You should do what VLK said an use safe mode with networking. If that does not work you should Restore to factory setting BUT BEWARE by doing that all your files, folders, apps., and programs will be deleted, and your pc will have the programs it came with when you bought it.Thats wat i did and it worked for me.What kind of computer do you have??
So I restarted in Safe Mode Networking. Downloaded the Avast Fix. Restarted . . . and everything came back as good as ever. ;D So very pleased Avast provided such a thorough fix so quickly. Not only is my system restored but so is my faith in Avast. Thanks so much for protecting us from the bad guys and providing a plan B that works when life isn’t perfect.
