Mysterious entry in my credit card account

This might seem like something or nothing. This morning, I checked my credit card account and noticed a pending transaction marked Norton Software £0.00.

I have two Avast products. One renews in February, and the other in November. My account page shows that my credit card details are valid for both of these renewals. So, what was the point of this ‘transaction’?

Previous renewals on the card account have been listed as ‘Norton Software’.

Avast help chat (in the shape of a person) had no idea and suggested I should take it up with Norton, with whom I do not have any products. So, I can’t log in to ask them.

This entry could be the result of a system change/reset in Avast/Norton or it could be a symptom of something suspicious.

My credit card company can’t throw any light on it, and I turned down their offer of suspending the account and issuing a new card as the likelihood is that the entry is benign and will disappear quickly. But I don’t like things appearing on my credit card account without any good reason.

Any ideas as to why this might have happened?

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.

I also use Avast free so I’m untroubled by this. Whilst Avast is part of the larger company Gen Digital For some considerable time), previously Norton Life link if my memory is correct.

However I would have thought transactions (if for no other reason to avoid confusion) would be for Avast.

You would think so, but it is only today that my credit card company pointed out that my previous Avast renewal was paid to Norton Software.

So, my initial alarm about having an entry in my credit card account from an entity with which I didn’t think I had a commercial relationship went away. But it didn’t explain why the pending transaction, which has now disappeared, was there in the first place.

Hello!

I write this reply just as another case of what was said on the original post. Same story, just different country. Today I was checking my credit card bill, and same thing, a charge of 0 from Norton Software. I looked up on the forums, just to find this post. Although I am calm knowing this is something not to worry about, it is weird. I know some companies make 0 value charges to check the availabity of cards, but this was just so random.

Personally I wouldn’t be that calm.

If whomever has made this zero charge, what is to stop them making further charges in the future. What the zero charge effectively does is to confirm the account is live and they have been able to connect to that account.
