OK guys, I ran all 3 of those anti-rootkit tools. Then I ran ad-ware again. Then I opened up avast! and scheduled the scan like you said.

The scan loads up and gives me this little error

Also, the windows explorer error i was getting before, this is what it looks like. I’m sure you have seen it plenty of times. I get it when I click on anything on my desktop other than shortcuts.

I’m not an expert on HijackThis… But you can check the automatic analysis of your HijackThis log here.

You can find more info in the links of the last column of this table.
That info could guide you on the cleaning process.
Anyway, if you have doubts, just post here.
Also, take a careful look at the first column of the table:

If you don’t recognize a legit program in one of the items marked as FIX IF UNKNOWN, please post it back here and maybe we can help you. Or, if you’re sure it’s a malware item, you can remove it as posted bellow.
If you agree with the automatic classification of the infected items marked as FIX (CHECK NOTES!), you can turn back to HijackThis program, check the box of this item and then remove it using the button ‘Fix checked’.

If you want to do it by yourself, click here to download HJTsetup.exe

[*]Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
[*]Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
[*]By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
[*]Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
[*]Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
[*]Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
[*]At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
[*]Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
[*]Click on “Edit > Select All” then click on “Edit > Copy” to copy the entire contents of the log.
[*]Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
[*]DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I honestly don’t know what’s going on with those two problems, but there is a trojan in your HJT log we should fix.

Open HJT again and click to Do a System Scan Only. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to these lines

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

There is a possibility that the 0xC0000005 error is caused by a hidden component of the SdBot worm, which was on your computer. I would’ve thought one of the anti-rootkit scanners would’ve remove that, but just to be sure, you can run the following removal tools to check:

The good news, my browser is running faster.

The bad news, I still get the pesky windows explorer problem. (Not sure about the boot-time scan yet, i’ll try that in a sec)

I ran the HDD check, and the memory check to pass 2 ie for about 10 minutes. Both inconclusive.

Should i leave the memory check on all night tonight?

Btw, I would include the error report that it wants to send to microsoft but you can’t select any of the text. However, it did say it was going to include a txt file, i searched for the txt file and this is what it’s called/says.

If Windows Memory Diagnostic completes the first pass and reports no errors, then your RAM is probably working correctly. It is unlikely that Windows Memory Diagnostic will find any errors with your RAM on subsequent passes using the same settings.

I’d say if the first pass was OK, it’s more likely to be a rootkit, or something else.

Have you tried the SdBot removal tools? Try a re-run with the anti-rootkit scanners using the in-depth setting where possible. Are they coming up clean?

Boo-yeah! I figured out the windows explorer problem. I should have noticed earlier but on the report it mentions something about megaup~.dll. So i did search and I figure out it was part of the megaupload toolbar i installed a while back. Now normally I hate tool bars add-ons for IE but this one allows you to have infinate dl/ul from 9pm-3am eartern. So, I disabled the add-on and everything is working great now.

Still getting the same error on the boot time scan. I’m going to use those tools to remove the bot you were talking about.

hmm from what I can see boot scan doesn’t work after the first time.

redirect.dll is probably just a bit of adware. It could be more sinister, a downloader, but its in quarantine now. Otherwise the logs look OK.

You should clear your temporary files which you can do with ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Download it to your desktop and double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. Put a check mark in all the options except Prefetch and click Empty Selected. If you use Firefox or Opera click those tabs and clean those too (you might want to leave Saved Passwords unchecked).

Since you also had infections in your restore points these should be cleared as well.

Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
Click NEXT
Enter a name e.g. Clean
Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
Click OK
The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
Select the More Options Tab.
At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done.

A third party fire wall would also be a nice addition to your security.
