Need an explanation please

When scan found an infected file I tried to delete it but got the error “File is not packed.”
I’m afraid I need some explanation what it means, and is there some way of overcoming this problem?

Thanks,
Oded

What was the exact filename reported (of the infected file)?

There were several infected files.
The one I remember for sure was: c:\windows\delb285.tmp
Btw, I’m using win98 se.

*.tmp are temporary files and they may not be there anymore after a reboot. Please reboot and immediatly run a full system scan with Avast. Tell us here what the result of that is. What infections are found, in what files and where the files are located. If it is a long list, which I doubt, tell us the things that “catch the eye”.

Not specifically needed at this point, but if you wish click on the link in my signature, get the HijackThis log analyzer (and HJT) and send both the hijackthis log as well as the result.log (as mentioned in the read.me file) to me. I will have a look and if it shows something harmfull or suspicious, I will mention/tell it here.

Good luck.

I guess scan will not find infected files now because I have deleted (manually) the infected files. (Sorry, I forgot to mention this in my first message…)
What I didn’t understand (and still don’t…) was the meaning of the error namely: “File is not packed.”
Anyways, thanks for your help.

Oded

Please do as I suggested. I don’t want you to have a infected system, so lets make sure yours is clean  I know it will need some effort on your side and that it will take some time, but better safe than sorry

I ran a full scan and just as I expected: no infected files…
However, I am still wondering what the message “File is not packed” means…
Isn’t there anyone who could please clarify this for me?

Thanks,
Oded

Oded, just a guess…
Maybe that temporary file should be an archive file when avast detect it (check the correct extension) but when it tried to scan it fails because the file isn’t a packed one… As I said, just a guess ::slight_smile:
