Need help: Avast Registration Error

I have a laptop running Windows XP 32-bit. It was infected and the McAfee anti-virus I had installed was not removing the virus. Yesterday, I uninstalled McAfee and installed the latest version of Avast (v7 )-free version. I got a memory exception at the end of the install which i momentarily ignored. On rebooting the machine, I got the Blue Screen of Death. I rebooted the machine again, and cleaned the system with Avast.

However, I have the following symptoms:

  1. There is a yellow triangle with an exclamation on the avast icon in the taskbar constantly.

  2. More importantly I am not able to register my installation of Avast.: The registration page never shows up. The page has a spinner for a few seconds and then closes.

I also have a desktop running XP 32-bit that was also infected. I did the exact same thing on that machine too. I did not get a memory exception or the BSOD. It shows neither of the symptoms 1 or 2. I am able to register on that machine.

Could some one please help me debug this issue? My laptop contains crucial information and is absolutely essential for my work and I am very nervous about this.

no security program have 100% detection…or removal success.

did you run the McAfee removal tool after uninstall?

run and reboot - http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

then try running avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

did that change anything ?

but…if you had a virus, you may need to get that cleaned first

follow this guide and attach (not copy and paste) logs from malwarebytes / OTL / aswMBR
