Need Help!!!!! Avast service stopped,

Hello All, I have run into a problem with my Avast program. 2 days ago I stopped receiving automatic updates, when I tried to do it manually I got the message- cannot connect to server. Now its giving me a warning your system is unsecured.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Avast and Malewarebytes but still can’t connect to either one to update.

I get the same result when I try to update MBAM,I get an error message… program_error_updating 536870914,0.

I have already checked my windows firewall to make sure I have avast listed as an exception, it is.

I have also tried changing my proxy settings in avast to direct connection and update parameters to computer always connected to the internet but the changes don’t stay.

Any help would be much appreciated.
I am running the free version 6.0.1000.

Here is MBAM log from the other night.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Windows Firewall

Yes Avast is set as an exception.

Deleted the entry and added back in. Still not connecting.

Try a repair of avast.
Start > control panel > software > add/remove > avast > repair

Unfortunately the XP firewall has zero outbound protection so it shouldn’t be getting in the way and exceptions will do nothing to help as these are inbound exceptions. Try the repair as suggested and see how you get on with that.

No Good. I get a window "error processing packages, Please use full update.

OK, this is the full virus definitions database - Avast! Manual Virus Definitions Update Download - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 42MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

Note: Ignore the file name in the images of the page that is displayed after clicking the download link, they are for the main program, not for vpsupd.exe which will be downloaded.

Double clicked, balloon said updater already running, possible internet connection problem, or firewall issue.

It looks like avast.setup has stalled (the regular avast updater, you can check and see this in Task Manager), you should temporarily set the Updates to manual, avastUI, Settings, Updates see image of default update settings.

Reboot, that should end it and having set updates to manual avast.setup should do its update check very soon after boot when a connection is available.

Now you should be able to double click on the downloaded file to do a manual full update, you can check task manager for avast.setup if you wish before doing that.

Hopefully this will work this time round and you can set the Updates back to their default settings (image)

The Infection detected with MBAM is a false positive.
