Need help Big Time!

Ok guys just thought I let you know, after I did my avast and superantispyware scans today, everything has suddenly started working perfect again, even on firefox! Google now works, and I can access this forum no problem and things are just generally going faster so thank you very much for the help. So my only queries now are on the windows update(which still does not open), virtumonde and wether I should install a firewall or something else for future protection…

Good, glad to know.

Is there any specific error message while you try to update?

Did you scan with avast and other antispyware tools posted here?

It will be very good to have a firewall. I suggest PCTools or Comodo.

In windows explorer, navigate to this location

Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

In the right hand panel, locate this file

hosts

Note it doesn’t have an extention. Right click it and open it with notepad. Scroll down past the lines starting with #. Are there any entries there besides 127.0.01 localhosts

 Hi Steafan :

As an easier “Alternative” to what “oldman” recommended, try downloading a
FREE program called “HostsXpert” from
www.funkytoad.com/content/view/13/31 . IF this program successfully
“Installs”, use either the “Restore MS Hosts” feature and/or the
“Remove Block Items” feature . Then reboot the computer and see if you can
now successfully access the Windows Update Site !?

steafan,
Are you by chance hooked up through a network?
It’s possible if you are that the network is blocking your access to the update site.

I have scanned with avast and superantispyware.

Done this, the windows update page still won’t open :frowning:

I’m not sure what you mean by this…

try one of these links

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

bob3160 meant if you where on a network, a setting on that network may be the cause.

If you are connected through a network, you may only have limited internet access.

While I was in Dallas, I used a guest account at the hospital. I had internet access but there where many restrictions.

 Hi Steafan :

In what “type” ( house, apartment building, dormitory, etc ) of location is
your girlfriend’s computer ? What is the Name of the company providing the
internet connecting service ? Are there Others in the same location using the
same internet connecting service ? Do you know IF the company is using
a “proxy” !?

In the “viruses” that have been detected by the security programs, do any
have the name “Beagle” ?

Hi guys, Oldman, unfortunately the troubleshoot link doesn’t work either :frowning:

Spiritsongs, we live in our own apartment, our internet company is called Freenet,no one else in the apartment uses the internet. I’m not sure what a proxy is,how would I find out if the company is using one?

Also there is no virus named “Beagle”.

 Hi :

Is your “Freenet” the One described at www.freenet.de/freenet/ !?
IF yes, does that mean you are using their “DSL” Service !? Since I do NOT
read German, it is “similar” to what is described at
http://freenetproject.org/whatis.html !? To know IF your Internet Service
Provider is using a “proxy”, you need to contact their “Customer Center” and
ask them !?
No one else in the apartment may use the internet, but wonder IF any Others
in the Apartment House may use “Freenet” !? Does the Management of the
Apartment House “arrange” for Internet “access” for ALL Residents of the
Apartment House ? I am unsure IF each apartment is Individually-owned !?

To get help from your ISP, go here and sign in.
They should be able to tell you why you can’t reach Microsoft.

Hi,

We are using the freenet DSL Service.

The freenet.de and freenetproject.org are two completly different things. I will contact the customer centre to find out about the “proxy”. We rent our apartment individually and had the internet installed on our own.

Hi,

Thanks for this, I will let you know how things go when I know more. ;D
