Need help getting rid of ANTIVIRUS.NET false antivirus popups/virus

Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop, Windows XP-SP3. Avast Pro.

The virus put “antivirus.net” icon on my system tray, constant false antivirus alerts and popups. Can’t access Malwarebytes, Hijack This or System Restore in normal mode. In fact, Avast is the only program on my desktop I can access in normal mode. Every other program generates a popup saying, “the file hijack(or whatever program name).exe is infected.”

Ran Malwarebytes in safe mode, found “Trojan.dropper” and removed.

Ran Avast in safe mode, found “FakeWarn-A” and put in chest.

Still have problem, ran both programs again. Malwarebytes shows Trojandropper again, and Avast shows no files infected!

Still have the problem. What now?

Thanks!

read it all before you start.
Malwarebytes works best in normal mode so step 3 is important to get malwarebytes up and running, and updated before you scan

Thanks Pondus, I went through the steps and everything looks good so far. And thanks for the heads-up Kenny, I made the profile adjustments.
