Need help insuring my system is clean

Hello all!

To make a long story short, my daughter managed to infect my system with something (happens every time she visits). Normally, MalWareBytes and Ad-Aware/SpyBot is able to take care of it.

However, this last infection was a bit more devious. I was getting Google search redirects, and my Avast was popping up with “blocked malicious website” notices several times an hour.

Running the usual cleaners and an Avast boot scan seemed to help, but not 100%. I was still getting those pop-ups! And the usual suspects were coming back with clean results.

After reading some other threads on this forum, I installed and ran SuperAntiSpyware in safe mode and that found a Window/Temp/svchost.exe that it said was bogus. I went ahead and deleted it, since I understand scvhost should be in a system folder, rather than a temp.

I seem to be ok, at least for now, but I was wondering if there was a scan or something I could run that would insure I was clean.

Windows Vista 32 bit

Well heck. Just got a randomly opening tab on my Firefox session. Apparently I’m not as clean as I had hoped.

I’m not sure what to do, at this point. Suggestions?

Yep two ;D

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

[*]Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
[*]Extract its contents to your desktop.
[*]Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

[*]If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

[*]If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

[*]It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr21/JSntgRvr/TDSSKillerCompleted.png

[*]If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
[*]If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of “TDSSKiller.[Version][Date][Time]_log.txt”. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

THEN

Download OTL to your Desktop

[*]Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
[*]Select All Users
[*]Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

[b]netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%*.exe
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
/md5stop
%systemroot%*. /mp /s
CREATERESTOREPOINT

[/b]

[*]Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

[*]When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Here is the TDSS log file. It found a TDSS rootkit, and deleted same.

Running OTL now, per your directions. Will post that log shortly.

And here are the OTL logs.

Note: I am running Desktop Shark, a keylogger on my system.

Thank you very much for your assistance! I eagerly await your input.

Looks better, just a sweep for orphans now. Once done could you let me know what problems remain

I have finished the MBAM scan. Sorry for the delay, I’m hanging Christmas lights.

I’ve been online a smidge, with no Avast pop-ups or mystery tabs opening up, but I haven’t been on much.

Attached please find the MBAM log, and I will let you know probably tomorrow if there is anymore signs of Malware.

Thank you ever so much for your help, you are a lifesaver!

Methinks you are cured

Looking at that I am a happy bunny

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [purity] [emptytemp] [EMPTYFLASH] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

Keep safe

My system appears to be healthy and happy. I have downloaded the recommended Defrag, and will be running it tonight after work.

Thank you again for all your help!

My pleasure ;D

Do you recommend Piriform defraggler?

Its quite good even on Windows 7 as it is from Piriform the makers of CCleaner.

Never used it myself - so I can make no comment
