Need help please - Avast 4.7

I have just run Panda Active Scan…during the middle of this, Avast dialog
box appears: “Virus has been detected” (Win 32:CTX)… also says
“When you click on the abort connection button, the download of the
dangerous file will be cancelled”. If i click on more info, I get the page
that tells you to inform them about the incident etc. If I click on the
abort button, the entire online scanning process comes to a halt.

Rather new at this, please could somebody give me the correct
procedure to follow.

Disable avast! while scanning with Panda or you will get virus warnings: Panda uses unencrypted virus definitions which avast! will detect as the virus itself. Panda is not trying to infect your computer, as people sometimes think.

Right click the avast! ball and select Stop On-Access Protection.

Don’t forget to turn back on when you’re done!

There are other option for on-line scans other than Panda, even after you have completed the scan Panda leaves behind its signature files that avast will detect on subsequent on-demand scans. I also don’t like Panda’s practice of creating a folder in the system32 folder ‘activescan’ to dump its c*ap and not remove it after use.

If you then delete this folder windows system restore is likely to save it as a restore point and avast may subsequently detect that also and if you do a system restore to a point that includes this it is back in your system folder for avast to detect again.

i was reading this topic and was wondering after having trouble with panda(also some of the problem mention in this topic)in the past…if you have avast!home or pro is there any sense on using an on-line a/v scanner and if so…which is the best one…hi davidr and thanks for help in the past…hope i didn’t change the course of this topic

I think that is a reasonable question, and I have wondered also.
My own experience is that the on-line scanners of any type never find anything.

I think I conclude it is not necessary if you keep Windows, and your anti-malware programs up to date.

I am about to conclude also that with the free AS programs available that the paid programs are not needed. They never find anything.

I rarely use on-line scanners mainly because most of them use activeX and I much prefer using firefox, there are some that use JAVA (not javascript) so it is possible to use it with firefox and avoid activeX. However I don’t need or want Java on my system either, so I’m a little stuffed ;D not that I mind.

If I need a second opinion on some file I can use the multi engine tools like Jotti or VirusTotal. Or I could use an on-demand scanner (provided it has no resident elements) as a secondary scanner, such as BitDefender or ClamWin, I’m sure there are others.

Overall the worth of an on-line scanner for me is limited as I practice safe hex and a degree of common sense, not visiting exotic web sites offering suspect/best tool since sliced bread, etc. nor open attachments or links in unsolicited emails, etc. That, AdAware, Spybot S&D, Ewido, HiJackThis, not using IE (activeX, BHOs and OS integration), DrWeb and SiteAdvisor firefox extensions and avast go a long way to keeping me infection free and negates my need for an on-line scan.
