Need help setting up Avast! to scan my mail

Hi I’m currently running the following

Windows Xp Home
1.5Ghz Intel Pentium 4
256Mb SD Ram

Avast!
Program: 4.6.603 (updated version)
Vps: Already up to date (current version 0509-3)

Mail Client - Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0

Well the problem I have is that although I’m running Windows XP which I have read is supposed to automatically set itself up for mailscanning with Thunderbird, it actually isn’t :-\

My Avast! On-Access Scanner tells me “The provider is wating for a subsytem to start.”. This is despite the fact that Thunderbird runs at startup so its definitely there. I presume thats what Avast! means by subsystem…

Anyone help me sort this problem out please. Without Avast! scanning my mail I feel like a frightened little kid instead of a Intermediate computer user :-\

The message “The provider is wating for a subsytem to start” you get only if you enable Outlook/Exchange provider in avast! On-Access Scanner. You don’t need that provider running unless you are using MS Outlook (not Outlook Express, two completely different programs). For Outlook Express and Thunderbird, you need Internet mail running, not Outlook/Exchange.

ok I’ve terminated the “Outlook/Exchange” service, but I still need to know why my “Internet Mail” is still not running… ???

I’m still getting the “The provider is wating for a subsytem to start.” even after a full system reboot…

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

The message “The provider is waiting on the subsystem to start” will be shown there until you open MS Outlook.
The plugin will be enabled automatically after that.

The Internet Mail provider is a system that starts ‘manually’ with all other Windows Services. It’s called ashMaiSv.exe. What service did you disabled?

I assume that you started Internet mail provider, otherwise, of course it won’t run. I don’t know how Thunderbird works since I don’t use it, but I know that many in these forums use Thunderbird without any problems. See here:

On the other side, it could be that you just need to repair avast! installation. Search these forums for “how to”… or if you are comfortable with it, you could just completely uninstall avast!, reboot, and reinstall it from the scratch. That should fix your avast! problems.

Cheers !

Tried the repair installation thing and that didnt work but…

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!! ;D

My brother just got back from the pub and tells me he disabled the service through windows before we installed ANY mail client.

Just needed to go to Control Panel - Classic View > Administrative Tools > Services and set “avast! Mail Scanner” from ‘disabled’ to ‘Automatic’

procedes to give brother beating
