Need help, was this legitimate?

Hey all, I recently bought a new network adapter but couldn’t get a connection. Long story short, I tried calling netgear but ended up calling iyogi. I gave him remote access to reconfigure my router settings. Anyway, he claimed that the connection was not working properly, and that he was going to scan my computer with some iyogi software. It took about 2 minutes to scan, and it apparently found in the neighborhood of 1500 threats. He said I needed to purchase their antivirus software. He tried telling me csrss.exe was a virus, without telling me that it’s also a legitimate file (I learned this after the call occured) I downloaded super antispyware and all it found were some adware tracking cookies, but it took about 40 minutes to complete the scan. I also ran a complete scan with the avast free version, and it didn’t bring up anything. Was I just scammed or ripped off, somehow? Is my computer in danger?

If you serch the forum for " iyogi" you find lost of storys…

If you suspect infection…follow this guide and attach the logs, then Essexboy will tell you

1500 Threats… ::slight_smile: >:( :(…

This keeps up, I will need a vomit emoticon.

As it is…more of the same from the “good karma” people. ::slight_smile:

On top of what Pondus mentioned, contact >>riley-at-avast-dot-com<< for problems with iYogi support, he will deal with your individual issue with them.

Thank you for your feedback, guys. Gargamel, I don’t understand what you mean. Was the whole “1500 threats” thing bullcrap?

bullcrap or 1500 tracking cookies or a file infector…if you have the last one then avast should go crazy…

So, I downloaded malware bytes and it says there were 0 infected folders or files. Am I safe to assume he was just trying to sell me some shotty software?

Not trying to sell shotty software…just sell a service of “debatable need”.

They use event viewer. It finds many things about your PC. Including things that have nothing to do with infections. They then (apparently, in at least some cases) tell you these are “threats” to your PC.

With both those scans(MBAM, SAS)+ Avast! saying nothing is wrong, I would peacefully go about your day, you are likely clean as a whistle.

I think that was the case, there have been many such cases in these forums, though this is a very small proportion of support calls to iyogi, though one such instance is one too many. I trust you didn’t purchase anything from them. When you contacted them was it via your netgear support contact or did you use the avast support number to arrive at iyogi ?

This is bordering on the rogue security applications that tell you you have X number of infections to get you to buy (give you a headache and sell you an aspirin). For a supposedly reputable company it disgusting and any employee found to be doing this should be terminated.

OK I have vented my spleen again, now you can contact Adam Riley - riley (at) avast (dot) com Avast Third-party Support Manager, has requested info about iYogi, so if you have time to recount your experience (copy and paste your post, etc.), give the link to this topic.
