Hi farkwarkle,

Have you ever had any other antivirus programs on your computer?

welcome to the forums, farkwarkle.

It would also help to know what OS your computer has.

Smiley:) hi all, sorry i took so long to return. but the offer of help is appreciated. i have xp sp1 and no other virus or spy ware installed(at the time). funny how this story ends. yesterday i finally got avast to work, and i had the SASSER virus which AVAST had no problem corralling for me. but the way i got there was this. i got STARTUP INSPECTOR from a freeware disk that came with one issue of MAX PC. this alerted me to the problem of a virus and while STARTUP INSP… could tell me of the problem and where to find the file it found and how to rip it out ,it isn’t designed as anti virus and that is as far as it went. BUT thats all it took to get AVAST to load and the rest is history.

By the way the telltale file in the reg is “Win32: SdBot.gen.p”

Updating to XP SP2 will eliminate many vulnerabilities that are being exploited including Sasser.

I see no reason to not update to SP2. On contrary, it’s well known that security and virus prevention ask for SP2 urgently…

Did you run avast at boot time?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
