Need help with Win32:Malware-gen infection

Hello everybody,

I would need help to cure an infection by Win32:Malware-gen. That little bastard has infected my mom’s computer some time ago, and as she doesn’t use her PC much, she only noticed that something was wrong recently (she couldn’t go to on Internet). Unfortunately, I’m not a specialist and would greatly need some help (it seems impossible to delete the malware).

I’m joining with this post all the logs asked in the sticky (I’ll do an other post with some more logs if it can help)

Thanks in advance !

As promised additional logs (for the anti toolbars and FSS)

removers are notified

Looks as though the TCPIP is infected

Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

No cure was available for any of the suspicious files…

I’m attaching the results (impossible to copy/paste, message too long)

OK next one then, on completion of this can you try the net and let me know what the result is

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_disclaimer_ENG.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/NSIS_extraction.png

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Mmmmmm…

I had a few… well, problems/alerts, while running ComboFix :

  • It kept saying that Avast was active, even if I deactivated it.
  • I had to install the Recovery Console (Don’t know how it is called in English : Console de Récupération in French") : I installed it from the Windows CD when the message prompted since I didn’t have access on Internet from the infected PC.

Anyway, nothing seems changed, even after rebooting the computer… Except the fact that Avast doesn’t seem to run anymore (no icon in system tray, only an “AvastSvc.exe” present in the task manager). I still can’t access Internet from the infected computer.

I’m joining you the ComboFix log.

There is no spare Tcpip.sys on your system so…

Download the following file to your C drive so that you have C:\tcpip.sys
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/tcpip.sys

THEN

  1. Close any open browsers.

  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

FCopy:: c:\tcpip.sys | c:\windows\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Uh-Oh…

ComboFix is running (it’s analyzing the system in the blue console window) and a Windows system protection dialog box prompts asking me to insert Windows CD in order to replace recently modified system files.

Shall I do that ? (It doesn’t seem to disturb ComboFix analysis)

Yes please do

ComboFix results.

Note that the last Avast process couldn’t be killed (as previously).

Could you run a fresh FSS scan please

Here.

Avast seems to have completely disappeared (aside from one process in the task manager), and Internet still can’t be reached. Everything else seems fine.

(Sorry for the delay, but it was already night time)

Localhost is blocked:
This is the problem so lets try to fix it

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Internet’s almost back… The computer seems connected to the local network. Interestingly I could only access google by typing it’s IP address. Same thing when trying to ping it : pinging www.google.fr wouldn’t work, but pinging 173.194.40.212 (google.fr’s IP address) worked.

OK progress is there lets see if we can get the last bit done.

Run the Microsoft fixit from this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Then download and run this small programme
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/restore_important_windows_services.html

Then try again

Mmmmm… Nothing changed. IP addresses are reachable but not URL’s.

OK next repair IE… At least you have a connection now, have you tried Firefox ?

Run this small repair programme http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/repair_internet_explorer.html

Still no change.

I have tested with Firefox and Chrome first. Chrome mentioned possibly a DNS problem.

IE wasn’t part of my tests but I tried after applying fix, and the problem is the same.

(Sorry but it’s already time to go to bed for me… So good night and see you tomorrow ^^)

OK lets now check out the internet and card settings

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

[]Flush DNS
[
]Report IE Proxy Settings
[]Reset IE Proxy Settings

[]List IP configuration
[
]List Winsock Entries
[]List last 10 Event Viewer log
[

[]List Devices
[
]List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
[*]List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using “Reset FF Proxy Settings” option Firefox should be closed.
