I have called avast about this 3 times but still have no clear answer so I am trying here. It really should be clear on the website but it is not even clear to their own staff because different folks there give me different answers.
I have a small computer installation/repair business but do not have a reseller account. The 1-year single computer license for Internet Security is $44.95 which is just too expensive compared to the competition. I can order a 1-year subscription for 10 computers for $179.95 which is about $18/computer and closer to the price I am paying for Symantec/Norton and Kaspersky.
In reference to the 1-year subscription for 10 computers:
Does the subscription clock begin on the activation date for each computer or the activation date for the first computer or the initial purchase date?
Are there 10 different activation codes or one shared code?
Generally the Avast Internet Security intro is for 3 PCs so it is 44.95 for 3 PCs So that is probably where the confusion lies.
As far as I’m aware, the License is from the date of purchase.
I don’t use the AIS version, but you receive a license file, which is good for the number of license you purchased, so the license key/file is good for the 10 systems. You can have it installed on up to 10 active installations, if you need to replace a system, just uninstall it on the redundant system and install on the new system and use the existing license.
If the clock begins at purchase date, then it would be useless for me. Although I like avast and run it on my personal systems, it doesn’t look like it will work well for my repair business. I cannot have licenses expiring on the shelf.
I’m pretty sure that is correct as they aren’t really designed to be used for resale when bought in this way.
You can contact sales (at) avast (dot) com though, if you are considering installing on systems you repair you would possibly be best to investigate the options of becoming an avast authorised reseller.
I spoke to a reseller yesterday, and he said that the volume purchases are the best deals but the service subscription clock begins at purhase rather than install. He said that he has heard that avast is planning to offer volume purchases for mulitiple installs but that option is not yet available. The best deal he could offer is $30 for a single license but that is about 50% more than I pay for Symantec and Kaspersky.
The avast product is good but the marketing leaves much to be desired.
So while I like avast, I will continue to use competitive security programs for now. Perhaps avast will modernize their distribution & sales processes soon.
