Just downloaded Ad- Ware 6 and not sure how I should set things up …did a scan …came up with 38 items …it put then in Quartine … is that what I was suppose to do … ???

Hi Awake,

Ad-Aware’s “quarantine” is essentially a place to save questionable files in backups in case it turns out you really do need them. Using the quarantine when “removing” things is A-A’s default setup

I tend to live dangerously and not bother with the quarantine, but that requires developing a feel for the kinds of “new items” that turn up. So far, knock wood, all I’ve turned up is tracking cookies that I missed with Cookie Pal, and I just delete those permanently rather than quarantining them. Or if they seem to be more or less necessary, like that Alexa reg entry, I’ll stick them on A-A’s Ignore list, so I don’t have to make a fresh decision about them each time they turn up in scanning.

So sure, if in doubt just stick them in quarantine – they’re out of the way there where they can’t hurt you, but they can (normally) be restored if you do need them.

Best,
Mike

How can you delete items from the quaratine …like the cookies and it came up with some Malware and the Alexia thing you mentioned in your note … it also came up an Attempted Browers Hijack

Awake,

Simple to do. Open Adaware. At the top, click on the square box icon.
This opens up the Quarantine window. Then right click in the window where the “bugs” are listed and you should see the option to “delete the archives”.

This takes ALL the entries out. You can highlight any individual entry and delete it using the Delete key.

I side with Mac and remove them immediatley becuase I trust Adaware scan.

Good luck,
techie

Is there anything I should do to like in regards to the settings for the tpye of scans …should I use the Smart Scan all the time or Customize my scan ???

With rare exceptions, just use the smart scan with “deep” scaning ticked (I think that’s the default anyway).

Somewhere in Setup options, there’s two to include checking your Hosts file and your Favorites – it’s probably a good idea to make sure those are ticked too.

Ok I have these checked off (1) Scan within Archives (2) Scan Active Process (3) Scan Registry (4) Deep Scan Registary (5) Scan Favorites for banned urls (6) Scan Host… Is there anything else I need to do … Also do I need a second Spyware like SpyBot on here as well or is this one good enough …Do I need to send everything to Quaratine or just delete the items like cookies after scan .

Also I was wondering if it is ok to edit the log on Avast …it is getting pretty long with all the enteries …Thanks Mike for all the help
Ok here are the items I have checked off …Scan with in Archives

We’ve got to stop meeting like this!

When you’re viewing A-A’s log, there should be a button to “clear log”, or something to that effect. Normally you’d only want a record of the most recent scan anyway. I just checked to see if there’s a setting option to overwrite exisiting logs when a new one’s created, but couldn’t find it. (Which doesn’t, of course, necessarily mean it’s not there.)

As for other anti-adware, you’ll get all kinds of answers on that. Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D work differently and at least to some extent are looking for different things, and quite a few people happily use both. I personally like SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard, both from Javacool – neither one is a scanner, SG blocks in real-time roughly analogous to avast’s resident protection, while SB sets “kill-bits” in the registry to prevent installation or running of known baddies.

;D  But I like meeting like this though …now I am really confused …can I get away with using just the one like with just using Avast sort of thing …I am not that bright about computer …though I can screw one up really well just ask my computer fixer …LOL

Awake,
I hope this helps:

already done Hun …Thank you though …

Awake,

As for your original question on anti spyware…
I use BOTH Adaware and Spybot. You will find that sometimes Spybot does not catch what Adaware does and vice versa. I also have installed SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster for resident protection.

You can find the SG and SB downloads at www.wilders.com under Freeware.

Hope this helps you.

Techie

Techie101 Do I really need to run two spyware programs though …one seems confusing enough to me …

Awake,

Actually, if you are referring to Adaware and Spybot, then I say Yes.
You can run Adaware one day, and the next time run Spybot. Adaware does update more frequently though and I tend to use it more often.

When speaking of SpywareGuard and Blaster…
These two programs are designed to work in synergy protecting you from spyware at various points in the computer. Not only does SpywareGuard run resident protecting your comp0ter from spyware entering, but SpywareBlaster removes any that try to run. They do not use much on resources and are a good addition in a “layered” computer protection proram.

Techie

Techie 101 ,
You are 100% right on the money.

So I should put Spybot on plus those other 2 then …where can I get the downloads though ??

Awake,
You can go here :http://www.download.com/?tag=hd_ts and do a search for the programs.
