Network exe files hang

I have a small home network with a xp machine win 7 and 2003 server. Whenever i try to run a program from a network share it hangs on my xp machine but not on my 7 machine. Any ideas?

Well, is it connected to avast! in any way? I mean, what version do you use? Does it help to stop some/all of the shields?

Its version 6 the latest one. I have turned off certain shields with no luck. They only way to make it work is turn off avast from services. What usually happens is it starts to load but then hangs. Every exe file from the network does this. I can open other files such as documents with no problems.

So it happens even if you disable all avast! shields? And - it hangs the whole machine?
Have you tried the latest beta? (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=73110.0)

If it happens even with that, I’m afraid we’d need a complete memory dump taken at the moment the system is frozen. The description on how to generate the dump is here:

(PS/2 keyboard is needed, not USB)

One of the main reasons that I upgraded from XP to W7 was to get improved network reliability on my small home network.

People who use XP tend to forget how old it is.

Its design and core programming are over ten years old.

In 2001, Microsoft released Windows XP (code named "Whistler").

The core programming on W7 is probably about 5 years old as Vista is actually the W7 Beta

Windows Vista was released on November 30, 2006 to business customers, consumer versions following on January 30, 2007.

Windows Server 2003 is an update to the crappy Windows Server 2000. Windows Server 2003 core programming is probably over 10 years old.

On April 25, 2003 Microsoft launched Windows Server 2003, a notable update to Windows 2000 Server encompassing many new security features,

The point of all the above is to point out that W7 is a different computer software generation program than XP and Windows Server 2003. This alone will cause all kinds of problems in smooth networking among the three. I don’t know about WS 2003 but I do know that XP is no longer being updated.

Your problem may or may not be caused by Avast software. My guess it has to do with the generational gap as noted above.

Did you just install W7 SP1? If so did this problem start to appear after installing the W7 SP1 update?

Good luck

It does not hang the whole machine just the program being run from the network share.

And - does it help if you stop all avast! shields?

Well I hadn’t done that I just stopped the service all together.
