Network Protection Issue

Hi all and happy holidays!

I am using Avast Home for ~1 and a half year now and never had any issues. Worked rather nice to be honest. ;D
But the latest database update leaves me wondering what’s up.

Date: 25th of Decemeber 2008
Version: 081225-0

Since that a site I am frequently using seems to be blocked:

Network Shield: blocked access to malicious site dragcave.net/account [ D:\Programme\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe ]
  1. Why would it be blocked via the Network and not the Web Shield? I cannot set any exceptions there to visit the site without having to disable the Network Shield altogether…
  2. Why don’t I get any information about why it would be blocked in the logs? None at all and the logs are set to debug which is the highest level if I am not mistaken.

And it is only that specific site, not the complete domain… ???

Thanks for the help in advance

Same here.
Today, Christmas day, Dec. 25, it is suddenly stopping me from accessing TYPEPAD.com (blogging site) control panel.
Same message you are getting.
Blocked by ‘Network Shield’. Malicious Site.
It was working fine last night.
I access this Control Panel 20 times a day to check my BLOG stats.
This definitely is an error.
Hope they fix it soon.
Like YOU I had been very happy with Avast. Then this.
Many thanks. All the best.
Anu :frowning:

aguruge, it seems ok here ???

I too am having this same problem with Dragcave

I’m running Avast! Home version 4.8 with VPS 081225-0

Again, what is the problem? ???
www.dragcave.com is redirected to http://gamess-online.us/?rid=3007622&OptId=11
Is it ok?

Actually it’s dragcave.net

And when I try to access “dragcave.net/account

this message pops up.

Network Shield: blocked access to malicious site dragcave.net/account [ D:\Programs\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe ]

Having the same problem with http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account/.

Just that specific page though all othe pages on www.worldofwarcraft.com work fine.
Happening with both FF and I.E.7
Date 25th of Decemeber 2008
version 081225-0

I do hope this gets fixed soon, I’ve been using Avast! for over a yeah and never had a problem besides this :-\

Seems a false positive… on a holiday, what bad… hope they correct it soon…

Just did a little playing.

I added “/account/” to the end of a few random urls and got the same message every time.

http://forum.avast.com/account/ for example.

Seems as if it’s blocking any url ending in /account/ for some reason…

hmm, interesting, i’m having the same issue; running the latest Avast

There SURE is a problem here.

Have a Merry Christmas.

:o

Hey now, no need to be so rude, Tech probably didn’t understand clearly what you had said.

And he said “it SEEMS ok” not that it IS ok. And just because he may not have clearly understood your problem doesn’t mean he can’t at least try to help!

Yes there is a problem, but maybe if you had read the rest of thread the problem has been fixed and will be put in place in the upcoming update tomorrow.

This is my first time on these forums, and I must say they have been extremely helpful, the people here being EXTREMELY nice and helpful which is more than I can say for you.

Yep, fixed now.

Thanks!

Recently had a problem that required MSN Windows reload, so lost everything including interfaces and protection.

I use Spyware Begone that searches for key stroke spyware. I guess I’m a bit obsessive about updating it. After reloading avast which I’ve loved for a long time - it now gives me the message, “Network Shield: Blocked access to malicious site sphywarebegone.com

I’m guessing that the mentioned update will fix this one too - I hope, because I’m not savvy enough to figure out what the trigger is for that one.

I’m guessing “sphywarebegone” is a typo?
Anyway, the program SpywareBegone was once considered a rogue product. It was de-listed from Eric Howes rogue site in 2006, with the comment:

Note on SpywareBeGone & SpywareVanisher: Both of these programs (which are from teh same company) were listed on this page as “rogue/suspect” because of problems with false positives, scare-mongering scan results, out-of-datedatabases with trial versions of the programs, and aggressive advertising. Since these programs were originally listed on this page, the vendor has taken several steps to address our concerns. Moreover, false positives do not appear to be nearly the problem that they once were. Given the changes made to these programs by the vendor, we can no longer regard SpywareBeGone & SpywareVanisher to be “rogue/suspect” spyware products

Still, I’d be a bit very reluctant to not installing it when there are so many alternatives around.
Avast doesn’t block that page for me. Either SpywareBlaster or my Hosts file has blocked it.
(Seems there’s more than one organisation still considering it a rogue.)
