New Avast Pro Edition User Exclusion Question

Hello,

I am testing out the Avast AntiVirus Pro Edition to see if it can be a site replacement for
our existing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10 install base.

The only question that I have so far deals with how exclusions are handled. Within
the Avast Help file it states:

“It is important to keep in mind that these exclusions affect all tasks, except for the resident protection.
If you want to set the exclusion for a single task only, you have to edit the particular task.”

What I am trying to understand is, what is “resident protection”? If I go into the “Standard Shield” provider
and add an exclusion for a directory that I don’t want scanned does it still get scanned because the “task name”
for the “Standard Shield” provider states “Task Name: Resident Protection”?

Actually, when I look through all the provider options, all of them have a task name of “Resident Protection”.

Can anyone shed some light on what the help file means and what the difference is between installed providers and task names?
Moreover, since all the installed providers have a “task name” of resident protection do I need to do something else to
bypass resident protection?

Thank you

Hi jweber. Welcome to the forum.

Setting an exclusion in the avast! Standard Shield is the equivalent of excluding a file or folder in Symantec’s File System Auto Protect

An exclusion in an avast! Task, such as a task called “Weekly Scan”, is the same as an exclusion in a user-defined scan in Symantec

Does that help?

EDIT: By the way, even though I’m obviously using Symantec Corporate 10 I greatly prefer avast!. Unfortunately I have 1.5 years left on this license …

Thank you for the information, this is what I was looking for.

We have about 6 months left on ours, so I am in the process of
putting together a report for the higher ups to see if they are willing
to make a switch in the AntiVirus department.

Reliability, speed, interaction with the OS and of course price is
a big factor in moving away from Symantec Corp Edition.

For the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning):
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…

For the other providers (on-demand scanning such as the screen-saver or the Simple User Interface):
Right click the ‘a’ blue icon, click Program Settings.
Go to Exclusions tab and click on Add button…

You can use wildcards like * and ?.
But be careful, you should ‘exclude’ that many files that let your system in danger.

All providers are resident: Standard Shield, Web Shield, Net Shield, IM, Internet Mail, etc.
All of them will be excluded (on-access scanning) when you set an exclusion.

The Task ‘Resident Provider’ is a way to set all providers.

You should find the sales @ avast.com (without the spaces) helpful in identifying your needs/requirements, costs, etc.
