WinPatrol jumps up and says Avast has inserted a new startup thing.
What is it and why has it been inserted in my computer without my knowledge?

It would appear to be an “emergency update”. We are questioning it here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=140730.0
So far, no one has been able to tell us what it’s for, nor why it’s running at every startup (as opposed to running just once to fix something).

Ok thanks for that. Yes I am wondering that as well. I re-booted my computer twice and the thing is still sitting in there ready to go again everytime I restart.
I agree, if it’s there to fix something why not run just once and that’s it! Thanks…
