new avast update freeze Windows XP

Some minutes after system boot, (at logon or after it), the new Avast update (5.1 or 5.3 I can’t remember) freezes my computer. XP doesn’t answer to user input, although things seems to be running. So, I was forced to migrate to Avira.

That is your choice, however not providing further information and allowing support to try and resolve the issue doesn’t help yourself or other users who may have experienced the same problem. :-\

welcome to the club, soscurso ::slight_smile:
There are about 10000 topics on this forum titled “5.0.88x update froze/broke/… my Windows 7/XP/…”
I was one of them… Could not boot for 2 days.

Unfortunately most of the “advice” stops at asking “did u have the latest Microsoft updates and did u have any other AV soft?” and when you answer “1)yes and 2)no” the topic becomes dead.

I myself now migrated to MS Security essentials. It is not the best but it kind of works.

I had the same problem with v5.1.889 on XP. See my post about the problem here and how I installed a previous version to get around the problem until Avast is fixed.

If it is fixed? ???

As you only have 6 post’s on this forum and three of them are telling people that you haved moved to mse so you couldn’t have spent to much time trying to solve your problem, you need to have more patience and your advice is not helping anyone.

I guess most here are luckier than me…

on Jan 19 My XP SP3 wouldn’t boot after installing AIS (paid for it!)…

hangs even after using system restore/safe mode/last known good configuration…

had to reformat…can’t even repair using windows cd… >:(
I just reformat my pc a week before…

seems that this problem not rectified yet…so I’ll stay away from avast for now…

and fyi…my pc P4 2.8GHz, RAM 768MHz and only used malwarebytes (on demand) that time…

I really think theres a bug with the program update .889…not just mere conflict…

all advise here don’t work in my case…

Which was your old antivirus and firewall before AIS?
Do you use ThreatFire?

u r right i tend to be a bit emotional. please dont forget that I could not boot for 2 days - and it’s just 6 forum posts of 2 lines… kind of fair balance of negativity imho

unfortunately happy polite “positive” posts dont get any attention - from my experience only screaming customers get some from hellp desk. That is sad but true. The other option to talk to big companies is to stop using their products - but it’s for sure not my intention as i like avast and dont want to see it go.

Another thing - posting follow-up pointless questions like “do u have the latest SP?” or “did u have any other AV in the past six month” may seem like helping, but it’s the opposite. It clutters the post and distracts from the main topic, and also makes the post look like the issue was resolved.
^^
There goes another 5 paragraphs that distract the devs from fixing it. :frowning:

no old antivirus,windows firewall
and I don’t use Threatfire…

There is a reason why we need to ask these questions. Very often remnants are left behind from previous security software because:

  1. Some people do not uninstall security software per the vendor’s instructions properly (or at all), then when they try to install a new security software like Avast they have problems.
  2. Some people forget how they uninstalled prior security software.
  3. It may be a new machine with a trial version of a security software that they were not aware of, now creating a conflict with trying to load a new AV like Avast.
  4. Having outdated software, like not having M$ patches creates security holes, thereby exposing the user to malware…another item to consider as to why the user cannot install a security software/AV, and therefore we need to trouble-shoot this as a possibility.

As you can see, we need to ask these questions for a reason, not to waste space. If you are interesting in learning more, I can send you links to help educate you as to why two AV’s on the same system create problems and how malware can prevent AV’s from running properly or you can do your own search on the forum to get this information yourself; please let me know. Thank you.

The XP3 machine that I run avast! on has only 384 mb of total memory, is 12 years old and it runs like a champion all of the time.
